    [01] Spokesman - Turkish Cypriots

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has dismissed as "unfounded" allegations by the Turkish Cypriot leader that it does not know how to handle the issue arising from the influx of persons, living in northern Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus, to the southern government-controlled part of the island.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today the government intends to take such action that would help Nicosia, taking advantage of the arrival of Turkish Cypriots in the areas of the Republic where it exercises jurisdiction.

    [02] Cypriot MP u Russia - Chechnya

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) u Cypriot MP and member of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly ad hoc committee on the war in Chechnya Doros Christodoulides left today for Moscow for meetings with Russian officials.

    According to a House of Representatives press release, the Cypriot MP will meet the President and members of the Russian Duma (parliament), the Foreign and Interior Ministers and other officials.

    [04] Kofi Annan - Mavrommatis - Iraq

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) - Special rapporteur for Iraq, former Cypriot Ambassador Andreas Mavrommatis, has discussed ways to improve the humanitarian situation in the country with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan during a recent meeting in New York.

    Mavrommatis told CNA that he is still expecting a response from Baghdad to visit Iraq for an investigation on the ground of the present situation in the country.

    Iraq has already expressed its intention to cooperate with Mavrommatis on this issue.

    [05] US envoy - Arrival

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) - US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses believes now is the "best time" for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question, something that needs the political will and commitment of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to compromise.

    The US envoy, who arrived here for contacts with the two sides, called on them to be "intensely engaged" in the peace effort and expressed hope that the third round of UN-led proximity talks will be meaningful leading towards an overall settlement.

    [06] De Soto - Visits

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) - UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto visited today the ceasefire line in the divided capital of the island and the Turkish-occupied town of Famagusta, where he met with members of the UN Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP).

    Speaking to CNA, UNFICYP Spokesman Charles Gaulkin said de Soto will have more meetings tomorrow at the Force's headquarters and did not rule out the possibility of meeting US presidential emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses, also on the island for talks with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.
