    [06] Defence Minister - Visit - Moscow

Nicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Minister of Defence Socrates Hasikos leaves tomorrow for Moscow for a five day visit at the invitation of his Russian counterpart Igor Sergeyev.

During his visit to the Russian capital, Hasikos and Sergeyev will sign a protocol of cooperation between the two countries.

He will also meet with Russian Minister of Trade Mikhail Fradkov. It is believed that Hasikos' visit "will contribute in promoting the existing friendly relations between the two countries and will provide the opportunity for Cyprus to stress once again that its main objective is the solution of its political problem through peaceful means and that under no circumstances efforts in the defence sector are an end in itself", an official statement said here Wednesday.

"For this reason President Glafcos Clerides' proposal for demilitarisation of the island still stands", the statement concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
