CNA EC/19991500:CYPPRESS:02[02] Council - Taxpayers - AppealsNicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus Finance Minister Takis Klerides today opened the state-run Council which will be responsible for examining taxpayers' appeals against the authorities on tax-related issues.Speaking at the opening ceremony Klerides said the body will help all citizens feel that they can find justice and bring them "closer to the state". CNA GG/GP/19991825:CYPPRESS:03[03] Cyprus Airways - Unions - No strikeNicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Trade unions representing Cyprus Airways workers have called off a strike scheduled for December 11 after the company undertook to submit a proposal aimed at solving problems and differences.The company issued a statement welcoming the decision, adding that they "responded positively to an appeal by the company's new chairman, Haris Loizides". In a statement, the three trade unions SINIKA, SIDIKEK, ASISEKA say that they met today with Loizides who promised that a proposal tackling workers' demands for pay rises would be drawn up. The workers had decided to go on strike to promote their demand for the implementation of their collective agreement, ending 1997, which included 2,5% pay rises for 1997. CNA EC/RG/19991940:CYPPRESS:06[06] Defence Minister - Visit - MoscowNicosia, Dec 1 (CNA) -- Minister of Defence Socrates Hasikos leaves tomorrow for Moscow for a five day visit at the invitation of his Russian counterpart Igor Sergeyev.During his visit to the Russian capital, Hasikos and Sergeyev will sign a protocol of cooperation between the two countries. He will also meet with Russian Minister of Trade Mikhail Fradkov. It is believed that Hasikos' visit "will contribute in promoting the existing friendly relations between the two countries and will provide the opportunity for Cyprus to stress once again that its main objective is the solution of its political problem through peaceful means and that under no circumstances efforts in the defence sector are an end in itself", an official statement said here Wednesday. "For this reason President Glafcos Clerides' proposal for demilitarisation of the island still stands", the statement concluded.
