Moses, accompanied by US State Department Special Cyprus Coordinator, Thomas Weston, and US ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler had a working breakfast this morning with President Clerides, also attended by Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and other Cypriot officials.

After the Presidential Palace, the US envoy went to the US embassy in Nicosia. He is expected later today to cross into the Turkish-occupied northern part of the island to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, with whom he had a meeting yesterday, soon after his arrival in Cyprus.

Speaking after the Presidential Palace working breakfast Moses said he made a statement at Larnaca airport. "That continues to be our position".

The US envoy had said on his arrival that "we are looking for a comprehensive settlement, in depth talks in accordance with UN resolutions and the statement earlier this year by the Group of Eight".

In a short statement after his meeting with President Clerides today, Moses said "we are talking to both sides --the leaders of both communities-- and I will continue to do that while I am on the island".

Moses, who leaves tomorrow, said when asked whether he was more optimistic that "by nature I am optimistic. You can't take up this job if you are not optimistic".

President Clerides made no statements after his meeting with Moses. His Foreign Minister told the press that Moses was trying to achieve resumption of the Cyprus peace talks.

He said he would not make further statements until the end of the current consultations.

Turkish Cypriot journalists were allowed to cross into the southern government-controlled part of Cyprus to cover the Presidential Palace meeting.

After meeting Denktash yesterday, Moses stated that "I believe that my visit will turn to be a productive one. Many of the things that Mr Denktash has shared with me I understand and can by supportive of.

"Our role here is not suggest how the problems of Cyprus should be resolved or what the parties should do but rather be a facilitator to try to bring two communities together for the benefit of the peoples of Cyprus and that will be my mission throughout my stay."

[03] Chinese parliamentary delegation - Departure

Speaking at Larnaca Airport before the departure of a delegation of the NPC, which paid a five-day visit to Cyprus, Jiyun said China is obliged to do so as a Permanent Member of UN Security Council and reiterated China's support for the solution of the Cyprus problem within the framework of UN resolutions.

[05] German Ambassador - Interview

Nicosia, Oct 20 (CNA) -- Germany believes Turkey should be given a candidate status in its bid to join the European Union as this will encourage her to comply with the Copenhagen criteria and because the Union has to rectify an earlier wrong decision, outgoing German Ambassador to Cyprus Gabriele von Malsen-Tilborch has said.

Berlin also believes that such a development would give Europe the licence to monitor Turkey more closely in its effort to establish a true democratic system.
