    [01] House President - Missing persons - Letters

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou has called on his counterparts around the world to help solve the humanitarian problem of the people missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus' northern third.

    In letters to presidents of parliamentary organisations, Kyprianou asks for the understanding, assistance and solidarity in this matter "in order to effectively exercise your influence so that Turkey changes its intransigent and inhuman stand on this tragic aspect of the Cyprus problem".

    [02] US envoy - Cyprus

    Washington, Oct 7 (CNA) -- US presidential emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses will visit Athens, Ankara and Nicosia next week with an aim to resume a Cyprus dialogue for a solution to the protracted Cyprus problem.

    He will be accompanied by US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston.

    [03] Chief negotiator - Estonia

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus's chief negotiator with the European Union George Vassiliou leaves tomorrow for Estonia where his counterparts from six applicant countries for EU entry will gather within the framework of their countries' preparation.

    This was announced here today by Vassiliou after meeting President Glafcos Clerides, with whom he discussed EU matters.

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides received here today France's former Deputy Foreign Minister Alain Vivien, who is currently in Cyprus.

    Vivien told the press after the Presidential Palace meeting that he discussed with President Clerides latest developments in the Cyprus problem and Cyprus' course towards European union entry.

    [05] Foreign Minister - Baroness Jeger - Archive

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Baroness Lena Jeger, Member of the British House of Lords, today handed over to Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides her personal archive which contains documents relating to Cyprus and its recent history.

    Among other things, the archive contains clippings of "Hansard", the British Parliament paper, newspaper clippings and part of the personal mail of the Baroness, who is a former Labour Member of the House of Commons.

    [07] "Nikiforos '99" - Parades

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- The Cyprus National Guard annual military manoeuvres, code-named Nikiforos '99, ended today with two impressive military parades in which Greek fighter jets participated.

    Four F-16 fighters of the Greek airforce as well as National Guard Bell and Gazelle helicopters flew over the two-hour parade, in the southern coastal town of Larnaca and in Paphos, on the western coast.

    [08] SOCCER: Austria vs Cyprus

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- Cyprus' national soccer team left today for Vienna, Austria, where they will play against the Austrian squad on Sunday night. It is a group six qualifying match for the Euro 2000 finals.

    The Cyprus team have a chance to qualify for the finals for the first time in their history if they beat Austria and Spain beat Israel.

    [09] Spokesman - Loizidou case - Turkey

    Nicosia, Oct 7 (CNA) -- The government said it is very pleased with a resolution the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has adopted, calling on Turkey to respect the human rights of a Greek Cypriot.

    "This decision is one more important step in the direction of the execution of the Court judgement and it has an obvious significance with regard to efforts to settle the Cyprus problem and shift Turkish intransigent positions," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.
