CNA GG/EC/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1620:CYPPRESS:03[03] House President - Rome visit - Cyprus questionNicosia, Jul 28 (CNA) -- House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou has received assurances from Italy's political leadership that it will never support a settlement in Cyprus that would divide the island.Speaking at a press conference today on his official visit to Rome last week, Kyprianou said his Italian counterpart Luciano Violante will visit Cyprus on October 23, accompanied by President of the Italian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, Achille Occetto, and other officials. The House President said some individual Italian deputies may visit the occupied areas at times, but the Italian government and parliament "have made it abundantly clear that they will not recognise the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied areas." Kyprianou appeared satisfied with the outcome of his meetings with senior Italian government and parliamentary officials. He said the Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was informed about the Cyprus problem and told him Rome supports the safeguarding of freedom, democracy and human rights on the island. Referring to efforts for a settlement in Cyprus, Kyprianou said that his conclusion from his meetings with President Glafcos Clerides and Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides earlier today is that the UN Secretary- General has not yet decided if and when he will extend invitations to the two sides for negotiations. The Cyprus peace process has been stalled because of a precondition set by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that he will not participate in talks unless they aim at establishing a confederation of two states. His demand has been rejected by the UN, the Cyprus government and all key players in the peace effort as it is contrary to UN resolutions stipulating for a bizonal, bicommunal federation. Kyprianou announced that he will be leaving for the Greek island of Crete on Friday to take part in events held to honour Cretans who lost their lives in Cyprus during the 1974 Turkish invasion. CNA AA/MA/EC/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1740:CYPPRESS:04[04] Ship - Rescue operation continuesLarnaca, Jul 28 (CNA) -- A rescue operation to find two Egyptian sailors who went missing after their ship began sinking 22 nautical miles off the southeastern coast of Larnaca are continuing, although authorities expressed fears the two are not alive. The other six crew members of the Honduran cargo vessel "Rofayda", including its captain, were rescued early today by the tanker "Sienna", under a Malta flag, and were taken to the Larnaca marina this afternoon. "Rofayda" was in Limassol port for refueling since July 24. It left the port late yesterday carrying a cargo of 3,000 tonnes of sesame seed and was heading to the Syrian port city of Latakia. Head of port police Theodoros Stylianou told CNA a helicopter and launch are continuing to search for the two missing sailors in the area where the "Rofayda" sank. Stylianou said a crew member told police there was an explosion on board at around at 0300 local time (1200 GMT) and then the ship began listing. The survivors, five Egyptians and a Sudanese, were saved after managing to swim onto a raft. They are reported to be in good health and were expected to be taken the police to give statements. CNA MAN/MA/EC/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1810:CYPPRESS:05[05] Archaeological findings - Rural communityLarnaca, Jul 28 (CNA) -- Archaeological findings in the site "Panayia ton Ampelion" (Holy Mary of the Vineyards) in the eastern coastal village of Aradippou, prove the area was continuously inhabited from the 4th century BC to the 6th century AD by people making their living off agriculture. The archaeological team from the University of Copenhagen excavating in the area for the past eight years has brought to light important findings proving it was a rural community. Speaking at a press conference today head of the team Lune Sorenser described the site as "very important" because it was inhabited continuously for a long period. Only one large central part of the site has been excavated but archaeologists will continue working in the area. "Our findings show it is a rural site and this is an opportunity to study the life of people who did not live in the towns during this period," Sorenser said. She added that "now we know that the inhabitants of ancient Aradippou depended on their land but at the same time they followed development and other trends in Cyprus and the world's big cities." An oil press and other agricultural tools found show that the inhabitants lived off their land, while other objects unearthed are similar to those found in islands of the Aegean proving that the locals had contact with the outer world. Aradippou mayor Christakis Limberis said excavations will continue until they are completed. The archaeological findings unearthed have been handed over to the Larnaca Museum, as Aradippou falls within the district. In the future they will be moved to the Museum of Popular Art which the Aradippou municipality is setting up in a house dating back to 1201 and is now being renovated.
