[01] President Clerides - US ambassador

Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- An American diplomat at the UN today expressed satisfaction with the Cyprus government's decision to align with European Union policy on Kosovo.

US Alternate Representative for special political affairs to the UN, Nancy Soderberg, told reporters after calling on President Glafcos Clerides that she also reiterated her government's support for a settlement in Cyprus.

Describing her discussion with President Clerides "very useful", Soderberg said she "reiterated our government's support for the Cypriot support to the EU policy with respect to Kosovo, both for the embargo and the search for a negotiated settlement to the crisis there."

She added she came "as a US ambassador to the UN both to reiterate President Clinton's and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's support for a comprehensive solution to the problems in Cyprus and also coming in a capacity from the UN where we are focused on supporting the peace keeping troops in Cyprus."

Soderberg noted the numerous UN resolutions renewing the mandate of peace-keeping troops here, describing their mission as "very successful."

"We had a very good discussion on a range of issues with President Clerides, who is a very good friend of the US and who I believe is a very strong partner in all of our efforts," she concluded.

The American ambassador, whose primary responsibility is UN peacekeeping operations, has already met UN resident representative Ann Hercus. She will visit UNFICYP troops this afternoon.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

A 1.200-strong UN force patrols the 180-kilometre buffer zone across this eastern Mediterranean island.

[03] British High Commissioner - DISI - AKEL

Nicosia, May 19 (CNA) -- Newly-appointed British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Edward Clay, today reassured that his country will contribute to efforts aimed at settling the Cyprus problem.

Clay had his first meeting with Nicos Anastasiades, leader of the island's ruling rightwing Democratic Rally party, since he assumed office last week.

Anastasiades said they discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and the crisis in the Balkans, due to the war in Yugoslavia.

"I stressed the need for Britain to exhibit the necessary will so that progress on the Cyprus issue leading to a peaceful settlement is reached," Anastasiades told the press afterwards.

He added this would help Cyprus achieve its goal for "the accession of the whole of the island to the European Union".

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.

The British diplomat had also a meeting today with Demetris Christofias, General Secretary of the opposition leftwing AKEL party.

An AKEL press release said Christofias told the British diplomat that efforts for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem should remain within the framework of the United Nations.

He said a settlement should be achieved in accordance with UN resolutions on Cyprus.

The AKEL leader repeated his party's stand for an immediate end to the NATO bombing on Yugoslavia, adding a solution should be reached through negotiations.
