    [01] Defence Minister - Departure

Larnaca, May 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Yiannakis Chrysostomis has confirmed that Turkish military aircraft interfered with yesterday's air manoeuvres, which took place in the framework of a joint Greco-Cypriot joint defence doctrine.

The minister, accompanied by National Guard Commander, Lieutenant General Demetrios Demou, left this morning for Athens.

Speaking at Larnaca International Airport, Chysostomis confirmed that Turkish jets interfered yesterday when Greek jets were flying to Cyprus and when they were returning to base.

There was no other incident and the exercise was successful, he added, but refrained from further comment.

Tomorrow Chrysostomis will travel to the southern Greek island of Crete to visit Cypriot officers, who work there for the installation of the Russian-made surface-to-air missiles S300.

Cyprus had purchased the missiles but decided not to deploy them in Cyprus.

    [02] Foreign Minister - Meetings - London

London, May 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides discussed an upcoming effort to achieve the resumption of the UN-led Cyprus peace talks with the British and Russian government envoys for Cyprus.

Kasoulides had a private meeting with British envoy Sir David Hannay and talked to Russian envoy Vladimir Tchizhov on the sidelines of events held in London to mark the 50th anniversary of the Council of Europe (CoE).

According to sources, the Foreign Minister and Hannay discussed an initiative expected to be taken by the US, Britain and Russia for the resumption of negotiations under UN auspices.

Yesterday Kasoulides attended an official lunch held by British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook and a dinner hosted by the Queen of England.

Later today the Foreign Minister leaves for Budapest, Hungary, to attend a one-day meeting of the Committee of Ministers to mark the CoE's establishment.

Hungary currently chairs the six-month rotating presidency of the Committee.
