1110:CYPPRESS:01[01] HMS Invincible - 24hour visitNicosia, Jan 19 (CNA) -- British Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Invincible today anchored off the British Base of Akrotiri, on the island's southern coast, to collect personnel and stores before passing through the Suez Canal to the Gulf.A British Bases news release says the HMS Invincible, who has command of other ships bound for the Gulf, will stay here for 24 hours. It is the Flagship of Rear Admiral Forbes, Commander UK Task Group, who has command of other ships bound for the Gulf. It adds that frigates HMS Boxer and HMS Cumberland are already on patrol in the Gulf. HMS Invincible, one of the Royal Navy's three 20 thousand-ton aircraft carriers, is operated by 1200 men and women. "HMS Invincible sails to add weight to the substantial capability already deployed in the Gulf," UK Armed Forces State Minister Doug Henderson said on 9 January, when the ship sailed from Portsmouth, England. He added that "this is the clearest possible signal that our efforts to find a way forward on the diplomatic front remain firmly underpinned by a readiness to use military force again, if need be, to keep (Iraqi President) Saddam contained." The HMS Invincible is expected to arrive in the Gulf at the end of the month. CNA MA/GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1455:CYPPRESS:02[02] Clerides - Ghalis' Set of IdeasNicosia, Jan 19 (CNA) -- President, Glafcos Clerides, stressed today that a set of ideas proposed by former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali back in 1992 aiming at a settlement of the Cyprus problem was not under discussion.Asked to comment on a statement yesterday by UN resident representative, describing the Set of Ideas as a "very substantive document" Clerides stressed that Dame Ann Hercus has never "since the day she arrived on the island mentioned anything on the Ghali Ideas". "We are not discussing the Ghali Set of Ideas," he added. Responding to questions of the press, Dame Ann said yesterday "most people will continue to describe (the Set of Ideas) as holding at its heart the core issues of the Cyprus problem". Boutros-Ghali issued a report to the Security Council on April 3, 1992 following a series of meetings of his representatives in Nicosia, Athens and Ankara, in which he included a Set of Ideas that had evolved from the consultations with the two sides. The Security Council endorsed this Set of Ideas on an overall settlement of the Cyprus problem with resolution 750 (1992) which also reaffirmed that a settlement in Cyprus must be based on a state of Cyprus with a single sovereignty. Meanwhile, Cyprus Government Spokesman, Christos Stylianides, said today that "shuttle talks" carried out by Dame Ann, with President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, focus on the substance of the Cyprus problem, reduction of tensions and armaments and on confidence building measures. Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
