0935:CYPPRESS:01[01] New Ministers assume officeNicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- The new Ministers of Defence and Education and Culture, Ouranios Ioannides and Yiannakis Crysostomis, assumed office this morning.Immediately after taking over their duties, the two ministers went to the Presidential Palace to take part at a meeting of the eleven-member cabinet presided over by President Glafcos Clerides. Ioannides and Crysostomis succeeded Lykourgos Kappas and Yiannakis Omirou, who resigned on Monday, after their socialist EDEK party decided to withdraw from Clerides' government following President Clerides' decision not to deploy the Russian-made S-300 surface-to-air missiles in Cyprus. Ioannides, who was an MP of the ruling rightwing Democratic Rally party (DISY), will be replaced in the House of Representatives by his party's runner up Christos Rotsas. Rotsas will be officially proclaimed an MP during a ceremony later today. Ioannides will keep up his party post as DISY First Vice President. Crysostomis was a Supreme Court judge. CNA GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1145:CYPPRESS:02[02] Euro MP - VisitNicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- David Atkinson, chairman of the European Democratic Group at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, arrives here today for a four-day visit for contacts with the island's political leadership.According to his preliminary programme, Atkinson is due to see House President Spyros Kyprianou tomorrow morning and then have talks with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides. The British deputy will also meet Cyprus' Chief Negotiator in the accession negotiations with the European Union George Vassiliou and see parliamentary party leaders. Atkinson leaves Sunday. CNA MM/GP/1999ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1355:CYPPRESS:03[03] House President - Israeli AmbassadorNicosia, Jan 7 (CNA) -- House President Spyros Kyprianou's proposed visit to Israel was the main issue discussed at a meeting here today with Israeli Ambassador to Cyprus, Shemi Tzur.The two men met for about 40 minutes at the office of the House President. No statements were made after the meeting. The visit, originally scheduled for the second part of February, is now due to take place after the Israeli elections on May 17.
