1130:CYPPRESS:01[01] Foreign trade statisticsNicosia, Dec 16 (CNA) -- Total imports and exports decreased during the period January to October 1998 compared to the same period in 1997.According to Foreign Trade statistics published by the Department of Statistics and Research, total imports valued at 1.565,5 million Cyprus pounds (one Cyprus pound is about two US dollars) while during the same period in 1997 they were 1.592,1 million. On the other hand total exports decreased to 475,3 m. pounds, in relation to 542,6 m. pounds in 1997. As a result, trade deficit reached 1.090,2 compared with 1.049,5 in January to October 1997. The amount of goods supplied by European Union countries increased to 845,6 m. pounds or 54 per cent, compared to 743,1 or 46,7 per cent, in 1997. At the same time EU countries absorbed 97,5 m. pounds or 53,8 per cent of Cyprus domestic exports, compared with 57,2 per cent in 1997, while exports to the Arab countries increased from 23,7 per cent or 47,6 m. pounds to 26,3 per cent. CNA MCH/GP/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1230:CYPPRESS:02[02] Limassol - Murder - AeroporosNicosia, Dec 16 (CNA) -- A 35-year old man who had been acquitted earlier this year by a court of attempting to kill a gambling club owner was murdered this morning in the southern coastal town of Limassol.A Police Headquarters spokesman confirmed that Chambis Aeroporos was murdered at around 1130 am local time (0930 GMT). He was not in a position to give more details as police investigators were at the scene. Chambis was critically wounded during a murder attempt against him on June 17, 1995. His brother Andros was murdered on July 31, 1998.
