[01] National Council - Decision deferred

Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- The island's political leadership has decided to defer a decision about a possible recourse to the UN General Assembly at a later date.

"The National Council will decide at its next meeting on 4 November whether or not to make a recourse to the General Assembly," Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides said here today.

Speaking after a meeting of the Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus question, Stylianides said the discussion on the matter was not concluded, noting that Council members did not deal with any other matter at today's meeting.

"We need to have a more detailed discussion to examine all the issues at hand," Stylianides added.

Any decisions the Council takes at its next meeting will be announced, he said.

Replying to questions, he said President Glafcos Clerides briefed Council members, the leaders of political parties, about his first meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative, Dame Ann Hercus, who started shuttle talks last week with the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.

[03] Turkish soldier - Illegal entry

Larnaca, Oct 21 (CNA) -- A Turkish national was jailed for 20 days here Wednesday on charges of entering the Republic of Cyprus through an illegal port of entry.

Ali Yuce, 21, from Diyarbakir, was arrested on Tuesday at the village of Athienou which borders the buffer zone dividing the government controlled areas from the Turkish occupied north of the island.

The Turkish national, a soldier of the occupation forces, went to the village coffee shop whose owner alerted the police about his presence there.

Yuce told police that he had entered Cyprus through Kyrenia port on 30 January, 1997. He left Turkey to seek a better life and said he wanted to live in the government-controlled areas of the Republic.

Another Turkish national was jailed for 20 days yesterday for entering Cyprus through the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in the northern areas of the island which Turkey occupies since 1974.

    [04] National Guard - "Nikiforos '98" continues

Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- As the annual military exercises of the National Guard, code-named "Nikiforos '98" continue, it was announced that a search and rescue operation will be conducted on Friday, some 30 nautical miles west of the western coastal town of Paphos.

Participating will be the Greek Airforce and Greek Navy units as well as the Cyprus Search and Rescue Centre and the air and navy rescue units of the National Guard, the Police and Port Police, an official statement said here Wednesday.

The aim will be to train the forces involved in realistic conditions within the Nicosia Flight Information Region.

At the same time, one frigate, one destroyer, a submarine and two torpedo boats of the Greek Navy will dock at local ports.

The warships will be open to the public over the weekend. "Nikiforos '98" will be concluded with a parade of the participating units in Larnaca on Sunday.

The governments of Greece and Cyprus agreed upon a joint defence pact in November 1993, providing for Greek air, sea and land cover in case of a fresh Turkish offensive against Cyprus.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus' territory since they invaded in 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.

    [05] Michaelides - Schlogl

Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- Austrian Interior Minister Karl Schlogl has expressed his country's keen interest in Cyprus' accession to the European Union and said Cyprus could be part of the European family.

Schlogl told his Cypriot counterpart Dinos Michaelides that Austria, current EU president, is very interested in Cyprus' accession course.

The two Ministers discussed issues relating to the EU, especially issues concerning illegal immigrants, asylum and organised crime.

Michaelides, on an official visit to Austria, said Cyprus is making a lot of effort to align its legislation with the acquis communautaire in these sectors.

He also expressed satisfaction with Austria's initiative to begin substantive negotiations between the EU and the six applicant countries next month and to contribute to the UN peace-keeping force on the island (UNFICYP).

Scholgl accepted an invitation by Michaelides to visit Cyprus. No date has been fixed for the visit.

    [06] Open House - UNFICYP

Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- The United Nations in Cyprus will commemorate the 50 years of peace-keeping operations world wide with an open house at the Ledra Palace hotel on Saturday, October 24, in the UN controlled buffer zone, under the banner "The Multinational Face of the UN".

A UN press release said here Wednesday it will be an opportunity for the multinational military and civilian staff of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the UN office for Project Services (UNOPS) to explain their work and activities in Cyprus.

Since the inception of UNFICYP in 1964, many nations have contributed soldiers or policemen to the force. Currently there are soldiers from nine countries and civilian police officers from two countries.

UNFICYP has 40 international civilian staff coming from 28 different nations, making it a "truly multinational operation which reflects the universal character of the Charter of the UN and its values", the press release said.

During the open house, which will also be open to the Turkish Cypriot community, there will be music and dancing, helicopter and UNFICYP equipment displays, UN information stands, games for children, food and refreshments, including national delicacies from UNFICYP contingents.

The UN Chief of Mission, Dame Ann Hercus announced that there will be an emphasis on free entertainment, especially for children.

She said there will be three specially organised areas of activities for children this year, organised and presented by UNFICYP soldiers.

UNFICYP patrols the 180 kilometre buffer zone which divides Cyprus since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.
