[01] CMP UN-representative calls on President Clerides

Nicosia, Jul 8 (CNA) -- The newly-appointed third member of the Committee of Missing Persons (CMP), Jean-Pierre Ritter, today called on President Glafcos Clerides.

Speaking after the 25-minute meeting, the Swiss diplomat refrained from making a statement to the press stressing that "it's too early to give any details, there are no details, we are just starting".

Ritter's 18-month appointment to the tripartite CMP, set up in 1981 and made up of a UN member and representatives of the two sides in Cyprus, was announced by the UN last month.

He is replacing Paul Wurth who retired in March 1996. Replying to a question, the UN representative to the CMP said "we are trying with Elias Georgiades and Rustem Tatar (the representatives of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides) to organise a meeting just after the summer holidays".

According to CNA sources the CMP is expected to begin its official meetings in mid-September.

Ritter, who is leaving at the end of this week, has already met with the representatives of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.

Yesterday he met Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. The Swiss diplomat, who has served in Cairo, Moscow, Cuba and Austria, is holding meetings to familiarise himself with the issue of missing persons.

A total of 1619 Greek Cypriots were listed as missing in 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of Cyprus' territory.

The Turkish Cypriot side has reported about 500 missing persons, most of which during intercommunal clashes in 1963.

One of the main issues Ritter will have to tackle is the implementation of a UN-brokered agreement reached between President Clerides and Denktash in July 1997, to exchange information on the missing persons.

Within the framework of the agreement, considered a major breakthrough in this humanitarian issue, the two sides exchanged information in January this year during a meeting of their representatives, but there has been no development since.

The Greek Cypriot side handed information on 200 Turkish Cypriots missing and the Turkish Cypriot side gave information about 400 Greek Cypriots.

    [02] Bank robbery

Limassol, Jul 8 (CNA) -- Police in the southern coastal town of Limassol has launched a manhunt in search of two men, who today robbed a bank in the village of Trachoni, west of the town.

According to unofficial reports, the two men entered the Laiki (Popular) Bank branch in Trachoni around 0900 local time (0600 GMT) and with the use of guns stole about 17 thousand Cyprus pounds (one pound is approximately 2 US dollars).

At the time of the armed robbery there were three clients in the bank and two employees.
