[01] Defence Minister to meet WEU Secretary-General

The two men will discuss the promotion of Cyprus' application to become a WEU associate partner, that was submitted by Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, in March.

The WEU has ten associate members, who belong neither to NATO nor the European Union, from central and eastern European countries.

During his stay in Brussels, Omirou, who belongs to socialist EDEK party that participates in the Government, will take part in European Socialist Party meetings.

He will participate in a meeting of the European Socialist Party presidency and the two-day meeting of the working group on European Union enlargement.

Cyprus is included in the first wave of countries that began accession talks with the EU in March.

[02] "Agon" newspaper folds

The owners of "Agon", which means "struggle", first published in 1964, decided to stop publishing as the newspaper is no longer cost-effective.

Today's last 10,278th edition, carries articles by the editor and journalists, who thank readers and note that many newspapers in Cyprus can no longer face increasing costs.

They also call for more government support to the written press.

In a front-page article the newspaper's editor, Panayiotis Papadimitris, says that many readers have been calling "Agon" since Friday, when the decision was announced, to express their sorrow.

Papadimitris adds that the publisher's decision is final, noting that "today's edition is the last in our 34-year struggle".
