Larnaca, Aug 30 (CNA) -- The Commonwealth will continue to lend support Cyprus and contribute to efforts for a settlement of the Cyprus problem, Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku said.

Calling Cyprus "an important member of the Commonwealth", Chief Anyaoku expressed his keen interest on being briefed by political leaders on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem "and to discuss ways in which the Commonwealth can continue to give its support to Cyprus and contribute to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem".

The Commonwealth Secretary-General made the statements on his arrival here for a three-day official visit accompanied by his wife Bunmi Anyaoku and Commonwealth Secretariat Assistant Director Indrajit Coomaraswamy.

Praising Chief Anyaoku's tenure as Commonwealth Secretary-General, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides noted that Chief Anyaoku had mentioned specifically in a letter addressed to Commonwealth leaders that Cyprus in one of the topics of special interest for the Commonwealth.

Kasoulides added Cyprus is an issue expected to be raised at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, between October 24 and 27.

"We know very well that the position of the Commonwealth regarding the Cyprus problem is unequivocal. It supports the efforts of the UN, the good offices mission of the UN Secretary-General, but has also taken very clear positions regarding the main issues of the Cyprus problem," the Foreign Minister said.

Born in Nigeria in 1933, Chief Anyaoku was elected in 1989 as the third Commonwealth Secretary-General and was re-elected in 1993 for a second five- year term, beginning in July 1995.

Kasoulides will host tonight a dinner in honour of Chief Anyaoku, following brief official talks.

[02] Commonwealth examines ways of helping with Cyprus solution

Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) -- The Commonwealth is steadfastly supportive of the UN Secretary-General's efforts in finding a solution to the Cyprus problem and is examining with government leaders ways with which it can contribute to those efforts, Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku said.

"The Commonwealth has consistently been in support of all UN resolutions on the Cyprus question and the Commonwealth has been examining with the Minister ways in which (it) can contribute to the success of the peace talks," Chief Anyaoku said today after brief official talks with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

The talks were held prior to an official dinner given by Kasoulides in Chief Anyaoku's honour.

However, Chief Anyaoku avoided revealing some of the ways with which the Commonwealth can contribute to the peace effort.

He described the talks with the Foreign Minister as "very useful", adding that the two men discussed the Cyprus problem, matters of mutual concern to both Cyprus and the Commonwealth, as well as the arrangements for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom between October 24 and 27.

Kasoulides noted that Cyprus counts on the Commonwealth's support for the re-unification of Cyprus.

"I believe that Commonwealth is in a position to help particularly the UN Secretary-General in his efforts to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem which must be based on the resolutions by the world body on Cyprus, " the Foreign Minister said.

Chief Anyaoku will meet on Monday with President Glafcos Clerides and House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou.
