[01] Marathon violinist passes on

Ioannis Charalambos Pipis' career as a folkloric violin player began in 1912 as a way to make ends meet after being orphaned at the age of ten.

In a career spanning an uninterrupted 82 years, he never once relinquished his beloved violin.

Pipis became renowned playing at over 1.500 weddings and other social functions, achieving legendary status on the island.

For his ultra-marathon career, he garnered accolades and prizes from home and abroad, peaking with an entry in the 1991 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records under the section of ''Most Durable Musician''.

Pipis was born in 1889, at the village of Argaki. The village has been under Turkish military occupation since Turkey invaded the island 23 years ago.

His most earnest wish was to go back to his village and play the violin at a village fiesta for one last time.

[02] Imports, exports on the rise

The figures were released by the Department of Statistics and Research in its quarterly report entitled ''Imports-Exports Statistics''.

Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) rose by 11,6 per cent to 1.549 m. pounds as compared with 1.387,9 m. pounds for the same period in 1995.

European Union (EU) countries absorbed 58,3 per cent or 109 m. pounds of Cyprus' domestic exports, followed by the Arab countries with a share of 19,3 per cent or 36,3 m. pounds.

Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-October 1996 accounted for 74,1 per cent or 139,5 m. pounds as compared with 136,6 per cent or 69,4 m. pounds.

Clothing and footwear accounted for 32,5 m. pounds and 4,4 m. pounds respectively, whilst exports of clothing amounted to 37,5 m. pounds and of footwear to 4,2 m. pounds.

Exports of agricultural products fell to 48,1 m. pounds for the period January-October 1996, compared to 60 m. pounds for the same period in 1995.

Potato exports accounted for 26,9 m. pounds compared to 39,9 m. pounds and citrus fruit for 14,6 m. pounds compared to 13,1 m. pounds in 1995.

EU countries marked an increase in the supply of goods valued at 745 m. pounds or 48,1 per cent of the total imports, compared with 712,5 m. pounds or 51,3 per cent during 1995.
