Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English, 98-08-29Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Cyprus Mail at <http://www.cynews.com/>Saturday, August 29, 1998 Show of unity from Clerides and SimitisTHE Cyprus problem, in the wake of the top-level meeting between President Clerides and Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, dominated the front pages yesterday. Greece is to take on board her historical obligations, Phileleftheros concluded. Athens and Nicosia have decided to mount a joint campaign to disentangle the Cyprus problem from the S-300 missile issue, the paper said. The Greek side would also be seeking to secure a personal settlement initiative from UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan, the paper added. Clerides and Simitis had also discussed the possibility of postponing deployment of the S-300s. Machi reported that the two leaders had not actually taken any decisions on the missile issue. It is expected that the contentious issue will now be discussed at the National Council, the Greek government having made it clear that future moves on the matter were entirely down to the Cyprus government. Greece had, however, reiterated that they would provide defensive cover for the island in the event of a Turkish attack. Akel mouthpiece Haravghi led on a call by party leader Dimitris Christofias for President Clerides to "shoulder his responsibilities" on the S-300 issue. If the deal was shelved then Cyprus's standing as a sovereign state would be damaged. If it was maintained then Turkish threats to destroy the missiles might be carried out, Christofias warned. Alithia reported that teenagers surfing the Internet's "pink pages" and paying for it with their parents' credit cards were running up astronomical bills. This was discovered by a mother who lost her credit card, told her bank but found, at the end of the month, that she had been charged for calls she did not make. With a bank employee she tracked down the culprit - hundreds of hours on Internet porn pages paid for through the Internet using her credit card number. A bank source said this case was only the tip of the iceberg. © Copyright Cyprus Mail 1998Cyprus Mail: Press Review in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
