Diko issues warning to dissidents

THE preparations of all parties for next month's presidential elections, the ongoing confrontation between Disy and the Akel\Diko alliance, and the handing over to the UN of information on the missing were the main subjects in Tuesday's Greek newspapers.

Phileleftheros said that the Turkish Cypriots, in the documents they have submitted, have revealed the burial places of Greek Cypriots who went missing during the first phase of the 1974 invasion.

The paper said the Turkish Cypriots have revealed the existence of graves near occupied Nicosia and the Greek Cypriots of graves near Tochni.

On another issue the paper said Diko has sent a letter to party dissidents warning them that if they do not abide by party decisions they will face the consequences.

Alithia reported that in an interview with Antenna TV President Clerides said the Defence Dogma with Greece gave Cyprus 'legal cover', adding that signing a defence pact would have violated Cyprus's Treaty of Guarantee. The president also said he expected that soon after the elections there will be a fresh bid to solve the Cyprus issue. He acknowledged that there would be pressure on the Greek Cypriot side.

Simerini highlighted Diko's attempts to discipline four of its members who have disagreed with the party's decision to back George Iacovou in the presidential elections. The paper said the four Diko officials have until tomorrow to comply with party decisions. If they do not abide they will face disciplinary action.

Machi said that the budget debate in the House of Representatives on Monday became political, with deputies of all parties exchanging accusations.

Haravghi also reported on the House debate, saying that Disy leader Nicos Anastassiades lost his cool when subjected to criticism. The paper said the Clerides government came under severe attack for its policies in all areas of administration.

Agon said the letter of warning sent to the four Diko dissidents took the form of an ultimatum. It said Alexis Galanos has already rejected the letter and will stick to his decision to stand in the presidential elections.
