  • [01] ApR suggests programme bettering the situation of Romanian agriculture

    By its president Theodor Melescanu the Alliance for Romania party - ApR - is proposing a programme for the improvement of the situation of Romanian agriculture by granting credits to farmers for this fall's and next spring's campaigns whose interest rates are 70 per cent covered by the national budget. To this added are measures for the speedy implementation of the SAPARD programme for the agriculture of this country.

    [02] AC supports the candidacy of Mugur Isarescu

    Civil Alliance - AC - supports the candidacy of Mugur Isarescu to the presidency of Romania mentions a communique of this organization. In as far as parliamentary elections are concerned the Civil Alliance considers that it is only the Democratic Convention for Romania 2000 that has to be supported but only after the lists of candidates are made known.

    [03] Harbor of Constanta is closed to traffic and activity

    Due to unfavorable weather conditions the harbor of Constanta is closed to all activities, reports the correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. Although weather conditions are not very favorable and wind is rather strong the harbor of Sulina - linking the Black Sea to the Sulina Danube channel - is open to activity and traffic is normal.

    [04] Inquiry of the Ministry of National Education and of the National Council of Academic Assessment

    An inquiry is conducted by the afore mentioned state institutions as there are data according to which false diplomas could have been given, attesting the graduation of higher education institutes by foreign students as well as the granting of diplomas of graduation of state higher education to students that did not pass the entrance examination and did not go to classes. MEDIAFAX which is quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reads that there could have been foreign students that paid up to 50,000 USD for these diplomas.

    [05] Investments for pre-university education in the villages of Romania

    The World Bank is pursuing a programme in Romania as part of which rural education is supported by the building of schools or rebuilding cultural units in the villages of this country. Minister of Education Andrei Marga was among the guests of the village of Guruslau in county Salaj for the beginning of classes at the new school of that village. All in all the World Bank is supporting the rebuilding and building of 800 schools in our country.

    [06] Debates of the Commission of the Assembly of European regions

    The town of Tulcea is hosting the debates of the Commission of the Assembly of European regions on issues of environment, tourism, regional development and infrastructure. The town of Tulcea is situated right at the point where the Danube branchess off in the three large rivers, forming the Danube Delta, before it flows into the Black Sea.

    [07] United States ambassador is now the guest of county Olt

    Mr. James Rosapepe is visiting county Olt where he was the guest of the plants and companies ALRO and ALROM that produce aluminum. American investors seems to be interested in these plants. The US Ambassador also had talks with local officials in the town of Slatina.

    [08] Romanian over Voice of America

    Romanian Desk Service at [email protected]. is the address of the Romanian Service programmes broadcast by the Voice of America at which all listeners are kindly requested to write expressing their opinions.

    [09] Medals in Sydney

    Latest gold won until now has been the Gold Medal won by Gabi Szabo in the finals of the 5000 meters women's race. Gabi Szabo put up a remarkable performance and established a new Olympic record. All in all Romania has until now ten gold medals, five silver and five bronze medals. Jigh jump, hammer throwing - women - and boxing - men - are supposed to add to the already gathered in crop of medals of the Romanian sportsmen and sportswomen.

    The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, is making an official visit to Thailand.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu attends a press conference during which the present situation of the country is in the focus of attention as well as the priorities of the Cabinet until the end of the mandate.

    A delegation representing the Cabinet of Romania is in Prague, Czechoslovakia, for the session of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The delegation is led by Decebal Traian Remes who is Minister of Finance. The aim of the talks there is to attempt persuade the International Monetary Fund to give Romania the third instalment of the stand-by agreement loan.

    The Chief negociator of the European Union for Romania is expected in Bucharest today for an analysis of the stage of preparations with a view to our country's joining the European Union.

    The Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE, Adrian Severin, was invited by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council, Lord Russel Johnston, to deliver an address in the plenum of the Strasbourg forum that opens the fall session of the Parliamentary Assembly.

    Minister of Justice Valeriu Stoica is answering questions of the media today at 13:00

    Winton Park in London hosts the Romanian Minister of Culture, Ion Caramitru, who delivers today an address on the CULTURAL DIMENSION OF EUROPE.

    A Romanian military delegation is paying a visit to the United States at the invitation of the Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, general Henry Shelton. The delegation of Romania is headed by general Mircea Chelaru, Head of the Chiefs of Staff of the Romanian Army.

    At Brasov opening of the regional center of the Management of Defense Resources which was set up in collaboration with the similar center of Monterey, California.

    Profesor Catherine Durandin who teaches history at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations in Paris, France is in Bucharest today for a lecture at the French Institute.

    As part of the festival BRITAIN IN ROMANIA the theater company A and BC presents THE TEMPEST by Shakespeare at the National Theater of Bucharest, tonight.
