[01] Results of the second tour of the local elections of RomaniaThe new mayor of the capital city of Romania, Bucharest, is Traian Basescu, a candidate of the Democratic Party, PD. He obtained 50.69 per cent of the votes while his counter candidate Sorin Oprescu, a representative of the Social Democracy Party of Romania PDSR, obtained 49.31 per cent of the votes. The six mayors of the districts of the capital city of Romania are all representives of the Social Democracy Party of Romania. The second ballot also brought about the election of the mayors of all towns and communes of Romania while observers note the fact that PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - has mayors in most in the Romanian counties .The newly elected general mayor of Bucharest, Traian Basescu,said that he was faced with new major taks and namely cleaning the Town Hall and the city. He warned he would not be hindered by any political game in reaching his objectives. He stressed the fact that all counselors of the Bucharest Town Hall must show by their activity that their work is in the service of the citizens. The President of PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party - Ion Diaconescu said the victory of Traian Basescu in the second ballot is also due to the fact that he was supported by all the center-right wing forces. Leader of PDSR Ion Iliescu said the most important thing for his party was that the citizens of Bucharest stood for an administration of the social- democracy which will solve the various issues of the community. The leader of the Democratic Party, PD, Petre Roman, said that Train Basescu was elected mayor of the city of Bucharest to fulfill a four year mandate, regardless of the results of the elections in the fall. The President of Romania has said that with a view to adherence to the European Union, the chapter EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL TRAINING and YOUTH was very well appreciated as Romania did not ask for any transition period. The President of Romania also said that in this country education plays a major role in the moral Renaissance of society after fifty years of communism.[05] Customs agreement between Romania and the UkraineOn Monday at the Ministry of Finance an accord of customs collaboration between Romania and the Ukraine was concluded in the presence of top officials of both countries. The agreement was signed for Romania by Nini Sapunaru who is the Director General of Romanian customs and for the Ukraine by Iuri Soloklov, chairman of the State Customs Service of the Ukraine. The document signed is aimed at contributing to the erradication of crimes and fraud in the areas at the frontier between the two states.[06] CALENDARAt the invitation of the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, Ion Diaconescu, a Chinese parliamentary delegation led by the vice-president of the National People's Assembly of the Republic of China Bu He is visiting Romania.Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, is meeting with the representatives of the five trade union confederations of this country to resume negociations on Ordinance 58.
