  • [01] Extended partnership: Romania - the Ukraine - Poland

The trilateral summit Romania - the Ukraine - Poland was followed on Wednesday by a press conference in Bucharest. Presidents Emil Constantinescu, Leonid Kuchima and Aleksander Kwasniewski expressed their determination to build up a regional architecture of security. "The structure is not opposed to anyone but it is a new step towards the contruction of a united Europe", President Constantinescu said. The Polish president stated that the Romanian - Ukrainian - Polish cooperation has a deep significance as the three states having a population of over 100 million people represent a huge European market, second only to Russia. In his turn, the Ukrainian president highlighted the importance of signing this year the basic treaties with both Romania and Poland. Likewise, Leonid Kuchima stressed that the Ukraine supported Romania's and Poland's efforts to join NATO having in mind the fact that no new division lines should be created in Europe. The three presidents have agreed to promote projects concerning the transport of energy resources from the Caucasus to Central and Eastern Europe and to create a corridor connecting the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea. The three sides have decided to cooperate in fighting terrorism, organised crime and drug traffiking. Polish President Kwasniewski suggested Bucharest should be the host of the trilateral meetings. The idea of a Romanian - Ukrainian - Polish cooperation axis was launched by President Emil Constantinescu in Warsaw this year. RRI-RADOR, November 27
