  • [01] Romanian prime minister on a visit to Brussels

    Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea requested in Brussles on Monday that the European christian-democrat parties be united to uphold a non- discriminatory enlargement of the European Union. Mr. Ciorbea, who represented the Christian-Democrat National Peasant Party (PNT-CD), the main party in the Romanian governing coalition, at the conference of the European Christian-Democrat Union, pleaded that Romania be admitted into the European Union. The meeting of the christian-democrat parties leaders worked out a resolution stressing the need for a global process of EU negotiations with all 11 Applicant Sates, and not only with six as the European Commission initially recommended. The Romanian minister also presented Romania's political and economic development during the talks with the acting president of the EU, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean- Claude Juncker.     [02] Romanian foreign minister will visit Austria

    Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin shall visit Austria between October 28-29, the Romanian Foreign Ministry announced. He will have talks with his Austrian counterpart Wolfgang Schuessel, Defence Minister Werner Fasslahend and Finance Minister Rudolf Edlinger. RRI-RADOR, October 28

    [03] Romanian justice minister returned from the US

    "In the US, Romania is now regarded favourably and we could see a significant opening of the Americans towards our country", Romanian Justice Minister Valeriu Stoica said on Monday upon his return from his visit to the US. Mr. Stoica said that the two countries plan a close cooperation in trainig Romanian lawyers in American institutions. RRI-RADOR, October 28

    [04] International Investment Fair in Bucharest

    The first International Investment Fair, organised by the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Reform, opened in Bucharest on Monday. More than 60 investment projects in industry, agriculture, services and infrastructure are being presented. The event is aimed at presenting to foreign investors Romania's main opportunities. Compared with its neighbouring countries, Romania has attracted a small volume of foreign investments and the government is now working on an emmergency ordinancy creating the institutional framework for foreign investments and facilitating their rapid growth.     [05] Pope John Paul received the new Romanian ambassador to the Vatican

    Pope John Paul II demanded on Monday that all goods to insure the freedom of their religion should be returned to the catholic believers in Romania. Receiving the new Romanian ambassador to the Vatican, the Pope underlined that the assets belonged to the Catholic Church before 1948 and they have been abusively confiscated during the communist regime. The Pope also expressed his confidence that, through a constructive dialogue with Romanian civil authorities, the catholic communities will be able to perceive concrete positive changes in the near future. Pope John Paul was to visit Romania - a country with a 90% orthodox population - but the project was postponed in June after the Romanian Senate voted a law stipulating that only parts of Roman-Catholic assets were returned to the Greek-Catholic Church.     [06] US provide consulting and financial assistance to Romania

    Romania is a strategic partner to the United States - chief executive of the US Agency for International Development Brian Atwood said on Monday evening after meeting Romanian President Emil Constantinescu at Cotroceni Palace. Participants talked about Romania's role in the region and presented American projects to support Romanian Gvernment's efforts to accelerate privatisation and decentralise administrative structures. Mr. Atwood said he provides not only expert consulting in the reform process but also financial assistence amounting to 35 million USD/year. RADOR, October 28

    [07] Romanian agriculture minister is visiting Canada

    Romanian Agriculture Minister Dinu Gavrilescu starts on Monday his official visit to Canada at the invitation of his counterpart Lyle Vanclief. According to a press communique received from the Agriculture and Food Ministry, his agenda contains meetings with Canadian officials in the Agency for International Development and Romanian-born deputy David Iftodi, president of the Canadian-Romanian inter-parliamentary committee.     [08] Romanian-Yugoslav Military Cooperation

    Yugoslav Defense Minister Pavel Bulatovic met Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin on Monday afternoon. After the meeting, the two ministers declared to the journalists that the dialogue proved to be the best way to capitalise traditional relations between the two countries. Stressing the new opportunities for economic cooperation created by the agreement the defence ministries in the two countries have reached, Pavel Bulatovic has signed with his Romanian counterpart the agreement of military cooperation between Romania and the Yugoslav Federation.     [09] A new maritime line

    The ferryboat "Eforie", belonging to CFR Constanta, left the harbour of Constanta-Sud on Monday at 20:00 hours heading to Mersin harbour in South Turkey. According to Captain Nicolae Gancea, the ship opens a new maritime line between Constanta and Mersin through Izmir harbour. RADOR, October 28

    [10] Prize for a Romanian philatelist

    Romanian philatelist Constantin Milu was awarded a golden medal at the World Philatelic Exhibition Moscow '97 for his collection "Romanian Postal History". Participants included representatives of 60 countries. RRI-RADOR, October 29

    [11] Weather in Romania

    Winter has come to Romania. Snow falls could be seen mostly in southern and south-eastern regions. Temperatures will range from -12 centigrades in the morning to 8 centigrades at noon. RADOR, October 28
