  • [01] Qosja: Granting Kosova its independence would be the most just step to take

Prishtina, 27 June - At their request, two collaborators of Carl Bildt, the High Civil Representative for ex-Yugoslavia, Ambassador Martin Luc and political consultant David Ostin, met with academician Rexhep Qosja, announced the newspaper, Rilindja (27/6). Answering their questions, Qosja affirmed that any solution which plans to leave Kosova under what remains of Yugoslavia would not be acceptable for the Albanians. He made it known that it is time that Europe rectify the unjust decisions that it took regarding the Albanians at the beginning of the century, when half of Albanian territories and the Albanian people were left under foreign rule. Today, Kosova is the major component of the Albanian question which is why its accession to independence from Serbia would be the most important step, and the most just, in order to reach a veritable resolution to the Albanian question. Mr.Qosja stressed the necessity to resolve the Albanian question in its entirety, believing that only in this manner can an enduring peace and stability be guaranteed in southeast Europe. Mr. Luc and Mr. Ostin thanked Mr. Qosja for his explanations and assured him that the reason for their visit was that the international community is preoccupied with the resolution of the question.

[02] Pjetr Arbnori: We will support only that which is decided by the people of Kosova

Prishtina, 21 June - In an interview given to the newspaper of Rijeka, Novi List, reprinted afterwards by the newspaper, Vecerni Novosi, Pjetr Arbnori, President of the Albanian parliament, says that Albania has already recognized the Republic of Kosova. It is for the people of Kosova to decide where and how it must live. The state of Albania support the Kosovars and their decision. We will only support that which is decided by the people of Kosova, said Arbnori. As for the possible division of the territory of Kosova, he said that the Albanians of Kosova will never accept it. According to the Serb newspaper, Pjetr Arbnori thinks that a Serb military solution for the question of Kosova would be considered as an attack against Albania. Albania has the right to defend itself in the case of an attack, he said.

[03] The Serb academician Pavle Ivic advocates dividing up Kosova

Prishtina, 21 June - The recent declaration of the President of Academy of Science and Arts of Serbia, Despic, concerning Kosova (see Kosova Communication 269), created numerous reactions in Serb and Albanian public opinion. Hence, the Serb academician Pavle Ivic declared to the newspaper Politika Ekspres that to his credit, President Despic drew attention to a vital problem which is the most important problem for the Serb people. He states that the only pacific, fair and democratic solution would be to divide the territory of Kosova between Serbs and Albanians. After losing large parts of our national areas, we remain a state where more that a third of the citizens are non-Serbs and have primarily an antagonistic attitude toward our state, says Ivic. Referring to demographic problems, he says that we are facing a demographic explosion of certain minorities including the Albanian minority which is that largest. The percentage of Serb newborns is in continual decline. In 1981, it was found that the average number of children born to an Albanian woman in Kosova was 6.66 while those born a woman of central Serbia averaged 1.85, three times less. According to Ivic, the increase in the Albanian population is three time greater than that of the Serbs which is falling. In some time, he says, in Serbia, from Horgosh to Dragash, the number of newborn Albanians will surpass those the Serbs. When they will be 20 years old, they will constitute the majority of young army recruits. They will then represent the majority of the electorate and consequently, will become a majority in parliament. Power will thus be maintained by the Serb party which will have assured support to the Albanians. This backing will only be obtained through concessions, says Ivic. About the idea of Serb colonization of Kosova, Ivic says that it is only an illusion. According to him, few Serbs would accept to go to Kosova which is why the only fair, pacific and democratic solution would be the division of the territory which would insure Serb maintenance of the most important monuments dating back to the era of the Nemanics. I am aware that by evoking such facts, I take the risk of provoking reactions. I accept to run that risk, because in such a situation, it is important, not to force oneself to preserve external tranquillity but to preserve internal tranquillity and conscience, says Ivic.

[04] The German Greens support an independent Kosova

Prishtina, 26 June - A delegation of the Green Party of Germany recently visited Kosova. Among its members was Mrs. Angelika Kster-Lossack, a deputy at the German Bundestag. After the visit during an Albanian-German meeting held on 24 June in Heidelberg, Mrs. Kster-Lossack states that her party had arrived at the conclusion that for Kosova there is no solution other than independence. Autonomy can no longer remain on the table as an option for the future of Kosova, for it is this very status which resulted in the establishment of apartheid in Kosova, she said. Mrs. Kster-Lossack then announced that her party intended to take up the question of Kosova at the order of the day of the Bundestag.

[05] Elisabeth Rehn expresses her preoccupation for the situation in Kosova

Belgrade, 24 June - The special rapporteur of the United Nations for ex-Yugoslavia, Elisabeth Rehn, stayed in Belgrade today where she met with senior Serb civil administrator. Among the main themes that she discussed with them was also the question of Kosova. After the meeting with Milosevic, Mrs. Rehn expressed her great preoccupation with the situation in Kosova. She said that it is clear that there exists a distrust and miscomprehension between Albanians and Serbs. That is why measures must be taken to deal with the situation. She emphasized that children are in a particularly grave position given that they are being deprived of school premises and are threatened by diseases such as tuberculosis.

[06] Kosova Imports are Two Times Higher than Exports

Prishtina, le 24 June - The Serb occupying authorities speak of an upturn in the Kosovar economy. However, analyses done by the Economic Body of Kosova demonstrates the contrary. Referring to these analyses, the Serb newspaper of Prishtina, Jedinstvo published that during the first five months of this year, the value exports of goods from Kosova was 28 million dollars, while imports were around 50 million dollars.

[07] Enrollment of Students Has Already Begun in Kosova

Prishtina, 24 June - Enrollment for the academic year 1996/1997 began at the University of Prishtina and in other Albanian higher institutions. The number of candidates is estimated to be around 6,087 (or 4,418 regular students with the rest being correspondence students). It is important to remember that this year also courses will be held in private locales, since the premises of the University and those of other schools of higher learning have been and remain usurped by the Serb authorities.

[08] Hemorrhagic fever claims second victim

Prishtina, 24 June - Once again, a patient with hemorrhagic fevers died at the Clinic of Infectious Diseases in Prishtina. According to the specialist, Salih Ahmeti, he was a major from the district of Gjilan. Two of six patients hospitalized in this clinic with hemorrhagic fevers have already died which leads one to think that this year also, this disease might have grave consequences.

[09] A maternity clinic opens its doors within the framework of the Mother Theresa Association

Prishtina, 25 June - Today, a gynecological clinic opened its doors in the Kodra and Trimava neighborhood in Prishtina. It is the first maternity built in Kosova within the framework of the Mother Theresa Humanitarian and Charity Association. The deputy director of the association, Jak Mita, addressed the people gathered for the occasion. International organizations like the American organization, Mercy Corps International, and Caritas from Vienna contributed to the construction. The clinic is established in a building place donated freely by Shaban Sfirca. It has eight beds and will function thanks to volunteering doctors and nuns who will be able to carry out between 30 and 40 births per day.
