[07] DEPOSITS IN STATE BANKS ARE SAFE

TIRANA, 1 JAN. (ATA) - By A.Keko: The Association of Albanian consumer has advised the citizens, who possess money and want to save them at interest rate to deposit them in state banks.

"Their money will be safe and guaranteed there and at favourable interest rates," Dr. Islam Cani, head of the Association of the Albanian consumer said recently.

He responded to concerns of many citizens about the recent rumours on a "crisis in state banking system."

The citizens are concerned about the fact that "should they deposit their savings in state banking institutions or even those are like pyramid schemes, which collapsed last year."

Last year before the collapse of pyramid schemes, the association had warned the Albanian consumers to be attentive and refrained from depositing their money to money lending or foundations.

On April and December 1996, the association distributed some 5,000 leaflets to sensitize the populace against money lending.

The association is expected to open four regional counseling centers to meet better the demands of consumers. It has proposed a grouping of centers in four regions as following Tirane, Elbasan, Fier and La, which cover three areas North - South and Central Albania, while the Tirana center will run the work of all the association.

This association has been operating in Albania since last year and numbers 2 600 members and 37 units. pas/ak/
