    TIRANE, AUGUST 3 (ATA) - By S Sharrexhi: The new general director of Albpetrol, Gjergj Kerri, was named to this post in the extended meeting of the administration of Albpetrol which was held in Patos yesterday. Taking part in the meeting was also the deputy of that zone and Minister of Economy, Ylli Bufi.

    After briefing those present of the latest analysis of the Monitoring Council of Albpetrol, its chairman Prof Dr Fotaq Diamanti focused on the rather grave situation created in the oil corporation.

    Minister Bufi underlined that "We are for a new concept in the administration of the state property. This property belongs to shareholders now and it must be more efficient. We also are for a concrete administration of this property, based on the legislation. " ssh/kled/xh/sh/

    [02] 10 ICONS OF THE CHURCH OF ONUFRI AND GORICA STOLEN

    TIRANE, AUGUST 3 (ATA) - Some icons of the church of Onufri and Gorica were plundered, writes Republika citing sources of police of Berat, which confirm that the event took place Wednesday.

    According to investigations so far, the theft is made by experienced thieves, writes the newspaper referring to police sources of Berat police.

    "Both churches hav 90 original icons of Albanian masters of Medieval times and according to preliminary data ten of them have been stolen," writes the newspaper, adding that it is not yet determined which icons are stolen.

    "As soon as the stolen are determined, Interpol will be informed to make possible their neutralization," cities Republika sources of Berat police. kled/xh/sh/

    [03] LAST FRENCH TROOPS OF THE MPF LEFT ALBANIA

    DURRES, AUGUST 3 (ATA) - By G Kabashi, S Gjordeni: The last troops and military means of the French military contingent of the Alba mission left the port of Durres today.

    Attending the ceremony held on this occasion were the French Ambassador in Tirane, Patrick Chrismant, deputies and leaders of local government.

    The speech on the occasion was held by the commander of the French battalion Colonel Philippe Ruazen, who said among others that "we carried out successfully our mission and are leaving a part of our heart in Albania. We would like to come the next year again in Albania but not as militaries but as civilians to meet with the numerous friends in Durres."

    The French Ambassador and local authorities met with the French troops ranked on the ship board.

    The French contingent deployed in Durres in the context of the Alba multinational mission ensured the delivery of humanitarian aid to Tirane and escorted foreign monitors' groups who attended closely the general parliamentary elections of June 29 and July 6 second runoff in the districts of Durres and Kavaje.

    360 militaries and 116 vehicles filled the boards of the warship La Foudre and Chample.

    The French troops in Albania reached Albania in April. Together with the French troops, the Danish troops who were deployed in Durres and Kavaje, left Durres as well. ssh/kled/xh/sh/

    TIRANE, AUGUST 3 (ATA) - Under the title "Government starts to show its works," newspaper Zeri i Popullit carries the address of President Rexhep Mejdani in the meeting he had yesterday in the presence of reporters together with Prime Minister Nano, the Presidency of the People's Assembly and government cabinet. The newspaper carries a pronunciation of Prime Minister Fatos Nano under the title "Everything which is based on pyramid investment schemes and is fraudulent will be definitely blocked."

    "With the name of Sali Berisha is linked all Albanian crisis, consequently with this name is also linked that political force which was in the lead of the country until June 29, 1997," writes this paper in an article entitled "Language of hatred, the language of failure." In its ninth page this paper carries an article entitled "The past makes us similar, the future unites us."

    "Not a penny from Rome," writes Rilindja Demokratike under the headline "President opens the way to Prime Minister, Nano admits his failure in the Italian capital."

    "Most negative conclusion for Albania in the Rome Conference was the fact that the donating countries ignored the program of Nano 3 Government,"says the editorial of the newspaper under the title "Rome ingored Nano program."

    "Demirel invites Berisha for a visit to Turkey," writes the newspasper.

    "The Socialist Party violates 'Rome Pact'" writes the newspaper under the headline "Revenge of communists also in the People's Assembly." "Socialist-installed Premier cannot compensate his moral and political inferiority by blaming Berisha," writes the newspaper under the title "Fatos Nano - an oxidized politician."

    "SP punishes but does not mend" is the title of an editorial in Republika. "As seen, socialists and their government allies have decided to change many things in the ministry structures at many levels, even in its content," says the editorial. "No foreigner would accept to pay Albanians' losses," cities the newspaper the Republican leader, Sabri Godo, in an article entitled "We must be careful because we are being under observation - Godo."

    "Domination of TV information or real pluralism," writes newspaper Demokracia under the title "Pyramids, loan-taking men and the law on administrators."

    "Let us separate from the past and be open to the future," writes the newspaper Rilindja regarding yesterday's meeting of President Mejdani with members of the government on the Rome conference. "Kosova third republic in Yugoslavia," writes this paper citing a CDU representative in Bundestag.

    "Nano frightened Rome," writes Albania. "Refugees, first political business of Albanians," is the title of an editorial of this paper. "The first week of the new government: 61 killed, 97 wounded," writes this paper in the second page.

    "Socialists have put Ceka into a circle from which he cannot come out, but only when those who put him in would take him out," writes this paper under the title "Purging is directed by SP."

    "SP has time to lose" is the title of an editorial in Koha e Jone. "Socialists, although convinced that Albanian Television and Radio is one of the institutions which ruined the Albanian state and nation, are still coward and dare not make the change for which they were voted," writes this paper under the title "Why do Socialists fear to discharge the leading staff of the Albanian Radio Television?"

    Under the title "Celo-Infedelity, institution of DP leaders," the paper carries an interveiw with former Interior Minister Belul Celo, in its third page.

    "Nano: pyramid investment schemes must be blocked," writes newspaper Dita. "Leaders of the state speak of public order, economic programs, the diplomacy of new government," uinderlines this paper. "A strange thesis of the President" is the title of an editorial in this paper.

    "Tomorrow starts the fight with gangs," writes Gazeta Shqiptare under the headline "Vlore gangs, unblocking of Kakavije, crime in Berat, here starts the effort for the restitution of order." "Meksi warns of splits in DP," writes this paper in its third page. kled/xh/sh/

    [05] GANGS OF THIEVES CAUGHT IN GJIROKASTER

    GJIROKASTER, AUGUST 3 (ATA) - By H Cani: Today at noon, police forces of Gjirokaster caught through a blitz operation a gang of armed thieves near the border point of Kakavije. Sources of district police report that the rapid operations of border police of Kakavije and the forces of the Gjirokaster commissariat made possible that a gang of plunderers be neutralized. It consisted of four people one of whom was a policeman of that commissariat.

    After it had looted under the threat of arms a group of 16 emigrants who had just returned from Greece, about 500 metres from the Kakavije border point, the gang of thieves, after a short resistance, fall into the hands of police froces.

    The group consisted of Saliko Rondo, 19, policeman in that commissariat since a month ago, Ilir Zhuli, 20, Ermal Cani, 18, the three from Gjirokaster and Shaban Malaj, 43, from Llakatund of Vlore, did systemmatically plunder Albanian emigrants who returned to Albania through that border point.

    Besides the gang members, police caught their van owned by E Cani, which had 4 Kallashnikov rifles, two masks and an amount of bullets. Since the judiciaries in that district are not functioning, the group was brought to Tirane on a RENEA helicopter. ssh/xh/sh/

    [06] SERBIAN ARMY KILLS TWO ALBANIANS AND WOUNDS SERIOUSLY ANOTHER NEAR BORDER WITH ALBANIA

    PRISHTINE, AUGUST 3 (ATA) - Two Albanians of Kosova were killed and another was gravely wounded Friday evening by Yugoslav border guards, while these people were trying to pass the border with Albania.

    The people killed are Tom Komani, 21 and Bernard Komani, 17, whereas the wounded was Gazmend Kqiraj, 25, the three from the village Zhub of Gjakove (nearly one km from border with Albania,) sources of LDK branch for Gjakove reported.

    Yugoslav authorities informed about the incident through a communique cited by news Agency Tanjug. According to Albanian sources, the situation in the border area where the killings took place and in the commune of Gjakove is rather tense.

    According to these sources and declarations by Gazmend Kqiraj, the Serbian army had opened fire against the Albanians without warning.

    On the basis of the communique of the Information Service of the Third Army of the Yugoslav Army, the incident occurred after "the people who wanted to pass the border illegally had opened fire first against the Yugoslav border points."

    According to Yugoslav sources, the incident happened at about 9.55 p.m. on Friday, near the place called Qafa e Prushit, whereas Albanian sources say the incident took place half an hour earlier" during an action of the Serbian army."

    The Council of Defence of Human Rights and Freedoms of Kosova has reported that in the last six months there have been 25 cases of people who have died because of violence and repression of the Serbian People's Army or in unclear circumstances. bj/mima/xh.
