  • [01] INDEPENDENT STUDENTS UNION REPRESENTATIVES MEET GOVERNMENT EXPERTS

    TIRANA, JAN 14 9ATA)- By E.Allushi, Representatives of the Independent Students Union met Tuesday afternoon with government experts at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, at the request of the latter.

    They discussed the demands of the union's petition addressed to the government.

    The experts stressed that the government had adopted decisions on several of the petition's demands. The decisions would also resolve a series of problems preoccupying the students so far.

    The director of the Higher Education, Gjergji File, said that with the decision to create the Student's Campus General Department would grant many powers to this department, which would be the mouthpiece of the students' interests.

    Likewise, regarding the living conditions in dormitories, the representative of the Trade Ministry said that the funds for the reconstruction of the damaged buildings and for other issues connected with the living conditions in dormitories would be increased.

    The solution of other demands of this petition was decided to be discussed at another round table. s.sh/lm/k

    [02] HUSBAND FORCES HIS WIFE INTO PROSTITUTION

    TIRANA, JANUARY 14 (ATA)- By A. Baci, Citizen Kastriot Shefit Nukaj, age 26, residing in the Ballsh town, Central Albania, has deceived and forced his wife, Valbona, into exercising prostitution.

    Upon her return from Greece Valbona denounced her husband, who was later arrested by Commissariat 4 in Tirana. jz/lm/E

    [03] OPENING OF POSTGRADUATE SCHOOLS APPROVED

    TIRANA,JAN 15 (ATA)- By E.Allushi,

    Schools for postgraduate studies will open at the Polytechnic University of Tirana.

    The director of Postgraduate Promotion Department, Esat Malasi, said that the teaching plan in the electric department of this school will be in two directions: electric-energy and automatisation in industry. The electronic department will include computer engineering and telecommunication and information engineering while in the mathematics department the school of engineering mathematics will be set up.

    Likewise, the postgraduate school of "Timber Technology" will be set up at the timber processing department at the Tirana Agricultural University. eva/lm/E

    [04] SUNDAY'S QUAKE CAUSES DAMAGES IN COROVODE

    COROVODE, JAN 15 (ATA)- By I. Manka, Sunday's quake, whose epicentre was in Berat, Middle Albania, was also strongly felt in the Corovode town, southern Albania.

    At the "Clirim" quarter of this town, two sections of a five floor apartment building have been separated from each other by 6-7 cm.

    The quake was felt 5-6 degrees in Berat and Gramsh, 4-5 degrees in Elbasan, Cerrik and Corovode and 4 degrees in Vlore, Kavaje and Tepelene.

    In Berat the quake has gravely damaged some 600 houses, a part of which are considered inhabitable by specialists. a.ke/eva/lm

    [05] TRIAL AGAINST THIEF OF RINGS WITH SKENDERBEJ EMBLEM STARTS

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA)- The trial against Sokol Begu, charged with the robbery of 50 golden rings with the emblem of the Albanian National hero, Skenderbej, in the apartment of citizen Nevzat Loci in Tirana, started Tuesday.

    "I am a professional thief but I repente so I should serve two thirds of the sentence", Begu said at the court's hall. Given that he has preliminary confessed the act of robbery, the procedure of the trial will be brief.

    As soon he was released from prison where he had served sentence for stealing four million leks, Begu carried out the robbery in Loci's house.

    The court's verdict against him is expected to be announced on January 22, 1997. kei/lm/k

    [06] CDHRF REPORT ON HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION IN KOSOVA DURING DECEMBER

    PRISTINE, JAN 14 (ATA)- The latest report of the Prishtine based Council for the Defence of Human Rights and Freedoms (CDHRF) says that "Serb violence and terror against the Albanian population in Kosova continued with the same intensity during December 1995," the Kosova Centre of Information reports.

    On December 9,1996 the Serb police tortured to death the teacher Feriz Blakcori, father of two children.

    Blakcori was the 14th victim of the Serb state terror last year and the third teacher killed through Serb police tortures over the past years.

    During the last month another 304 Albanians were subjected to the Serb police brutality, the report says.

    The pursuit of the Albanian youths to violently recruit them in the Serb army continues.

    During this period there were 96 cases of physical and psychological torture. There were also five cases of real estate confiscation and usurpation, five cases of interventions in educational institutions, where 21 activists were maltreated.

    The CDHRF also recorded three cases of passport deprivations during December.

    During the past month the CDHRF was also informed of seven cases of robberies among Albanian traders and citizens in various cities of the Republic of Kosova.

    Every week there were cases of raids on markets in the communes of Kosova which were mainly organised by Serb financial inspectors and police.

    During December there were also cases of preventing Albanian asylum- seekers from returning to Kosova from Germany. There were three cases with Albanians, among them women and children, being maltreated by the police and who were forced to return where they came from, the report says. sara/kei/lm/k

    [07] THREE PLUNDERED ICONS FOUND AND SEQUESTERED IN KORCA

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA)-Three icons, "St Vasil" in two views and "St Mary and Christ" were found and sequestrated on Tuesday during a raid of the public order forces of Korca, Southeastern Albania, on the apartment of citizen Elvira Cela.

    At the beginning Cela told the police that they were relics of the house, inherited by hee mother-in-law but which were hidden under a wardrobe "to keep them safe".

    According to specialists the icons date back to an early time and the first hypothesis, based on their technical data, leads you to the Berati churches.

    The police arrested the son of the F. Cela family, age 20, suspected of plundering the icons, based on secretly kept evidence.

    The Korca commissariat declared wanted the friend of the arrested youth, as an accomplice in robbing the icons. kei/lm/E

    [08] PRESS REVIEW

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA)-Today's Rilindja Demokratike under the title: "The legalization of emigrants in two stages", reports that the meeting of three Greek ministers for the examination of the presidential decree, is postponed. The paper carries an explanation of the Albanian National Trade Bank under the title: "The limit in 'cash' is an international practice".

    The newspaper also carries an article on health care infrastructure as well as an article: "Communication with the people - key of DP victory".

    Zeri i Popullit in its today's editorial reports that the President of charitable foundation "People's democracy Xhaferri" was summoned last evening to the Tirana's Attorney Office. The paper carries the article "Albanian Socialist Party heading the massive and democratic actions", as well as a pronunciation of the representative of the usuries' firm "Sudja", which says that the her firm will give back the money to the clients.

    Republika carries the article: "Authorities under investigation for involvement in usuries". In its editorial the paper asks if there will appear again motionists in the Democratic Party.

    Rilindja carries the article "Serb violence and terror on the Albanian population". Another article says that "The American plan of action aims the promotion of democracy in Serbia".

    Albania carries the article "Sudja doesn't have anything (money) to give". The paper also carries the article: "Unknown moneychangers carry away the foreign currency". In its editorial "Tirana's enclosure", the paper says that kiosks and other illegal construction have occupied Tirana. The paper reports on yesterday's meeting of DP presidency.

    In its editorial, Koha Jone says that the $13O million, which disappeared yesterday on a speedboat, are only a state alibi on the usuries. Another article says that according to president of VEFA company, Vehbi Alimuca, "the money the bank gives us, are not enough to buy tomatoes, either". This paper also reports on the investigation of the president of "Xhaferri" foundation.

    Dita Informacion says that the representative of the "Sude" usuries firm asked yesterday a loan to give the money back to her investors and that the president of VEFA is not satisfied with the Banks.

    "The accountant of Xhaferri foundation is detained", reports today's Gazeta Shqiptare. The paper writes: "Today, the proof day for the Sudja firm and Gjallica company". /jz/kei/E

    [09] SIX PERSONS WHO HELPED PROSTITUTION IN FIERI DISTRICT ARRESTED

    FIER, JAN 15 (ATA) By Harilla Koci: Six persons from a group which favoured prostitution for profits in the Fieri district (Central Albania) were arrested.

    They used a house in the city to violate and grab girls aiming at exercising prostitution.

    The chief of the Fieri Commissariat, Mevlan Xhindoli, says that in the last three months, the police of this district have uncovered 6 cases of sexual violation or grab of girls, aiming at exercising prostitution./a.ke/eva/mt/sh/

    [10] AUTHOR OF STEALING GRENADES UNDER ARREST

    SARANDA, JAN 15 (ATA) By Sh. Hajno: The number of the arrested persons, accused of stealing a munition depot in the military unit of Rusani, one km far from Delvina, has increased.

    "Today was arrested the citizen Eduard Shehu, who currently conducted the military service in Grehot of Gjirokastra", an official source of the Military Attorney's Office in Saranda told ATA. He added that Shehu is also accused of stealing a quantity of grenades in the munition depot in Rusan, but he did not make comments about the other suspected persons, involved in this case.

    The event happened about two months ago, when the soldier being on duty near the munition depot gave the alarm for stealing the object of special importance. The Military Attorney's Office was in alarm too, as well as the criminal police of the Delvina district. Arrested are also O. Shkembi, S. Hoxha and A. Islami, who are accused of stealing in collaboration the military munition./a.m/pas/mt/sh/

    [11] UNKNOWN MONEY-CHANGERS GRAB FOREIGN CURRENCY

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA) - Unknown money-changers, who had never worked as money-changers, grabbed recently the foreign currency, mainly dollars and Swiss franc in the free market of Tirana, confessed for Albania paper the majority part of money-changers, after a test of the paper.

    According to these sources, the influence of the unknown money- changers in the market was constraint and this was the reason that dollar was bought recently in its highest values reached in these four last years (1 dollar=120 lek, from 105 lek bought before).

    The temporary money-changers collected the foreign currency in the market, meanwhile that none of them was in the free market. Just after this, the specialists of some banks, worried about the increase of dollar, arrived in the market, ends the paper./jz/mt/sh/

    [12] FPWC DEFINES ORGANIZATION STRATEGY TO REALIZE MESSAGES OF PEKIN

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA) By Atalanta Pasko: The Foundation for Protection of Woman and Child (FPWC) held Wednesday a meeting in one of the halls of Tirana International Hotel, which aims at realizing the platform "Woman, Family, Society", based on the conclusions of the IV International Woman Conference .

    The meeting was organized under the care of the First Lady of Albania, dr. Liri Berisha, and directed by FPWC chairman, Lajla Pernaska.

    Along with the representatives from many Non Government Organizations (NGO) of women, attending were also the State Secretary for Youth and Woman, Roza Pati, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Arlinda Ymeraj, State Secretary for Sports Marjeta Pronjari, DP Deputy Natasha Shehu, and others. In this meeting was elected a group which will lead the work to crystallize the platform in conformity with the problems and conditions in Albania.

    The current activity is included in the second stage of the work planned by FPWC to realize the conclusions of the International Conference of Woman held in Pekin on September 1995. The first phase had to do with the meeting, preparations and translation of the necessary materials. During the third phase, envisaged to finish on February 20, will be the crystallization of the platform and after that it is envisaged to put it in life.

    The parties which will cooperate to draft and put in life the platform are the State Secretariat for Woman, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, FPWC and other institutions, associations and organizations.

    The strategic objectives to be reached through the platform, are connected with problems such as poverty of woman, education and training of women, violation against woman, women's rights, institutional mechanisms for the progress of women, children and violation against them, participation of women in power and decision taking, etc./jz/mt/sh/

    [13] PROGRESS OF ALBANIA IS ADMIRABLE AND IMPRESSIBLE IN ALL FIELDS - From the meeting Piska - Arbnori

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA) - Albanian Speaker Pjeter Arbnori, who is participating in the OSCE meeting held in Wien, met Wednesday the deputy chairman of the Constitutional Court, Mr. Karl Piska, Parliament's spokesman reports.

    In the meeting, Arbnori pointed out among others the personal contribution of Mr. Piska, friend of Albania in the intensification of relations between Austria and Albania.

    Piska appreciated the fact that the progress of Albania is admirable and impressible in all fields.

    "No other ex-communist country has had such a communist regime as Albania. By appreciating this inheritance, you should judge some problems you have and which are logic", he stressed.

    They discussed in the meeting about problems connected with the application of law, juridical system in general, etc. Piska expressed the readiness of Austria to help Albania in these important fields.

    According to the spokesman, Arbnori is expected to meet Thursday with the Austrian Speaker, Mr. Heinz Fischer. /s.sh/kled/mt/sh/

    [14] MINISTRY OF HEALTH DRAFTS PROJECTS TO IMPROVE HEALTH SERVICE IN ALBANIA

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA) By Kledi Shegani: The Ministry of Health and Environment in cooperation with the World Health Organization is working to draft and apply the projects for improving the quality of health service in Albania, spokesman of the Ministry of Health, Elda Kongoli reports.

    These projects are drafted and applied in order to achieve health objectives in the framework of the program "Health for everybody in the years 2000".

    For the application of the health policy and concretely for the increase of quality and improvement of health care standards, the Ministry of Health shares the opinion that the participation of population itself is an important factor.

    An example of this is the Project Diabcare, which is drafted and has started to be applied in several countries of Europe. The project aims at improving the results of treatment for the patients with diabet and going towards the improvement of the ways of treatment, by considering very important the participation of the patient in the treatment.

    In the framework of this initiative, in the Ministry of Health was organized recently a meeting with different partners, participating was also the Minister of Health, Maksim Cikuli.

    Attending were representatives from different Albanian firms, who showed their readiness to support this project, spokesman of this Ministry reports./mt/sh/

    [15] ALBANIAN PRESIDENT GREETS AGREEMENT REGARDING HEBRON

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA) - Albanian President Sali Berisha greeted Wednesday the accord reached between Premier of Israel Netaniahu and Palestinian President Araffat, with regard to the city of Hebron.

    "This agreement marks a very important phase in consolidation of peace and understanding between both countries, friends of Albania. The process of peace in this region remains fundamental for the stability and progress in the Near East. I greet Premier Netaniahu and President Araffat, as well as the others who contributed in this achievement. The decision has been undoubtedly not easy, but it opens the ways for a better future", said President Berisha.

    The Albanian President visited Israel at the beginning of 1996 and met recently in Tirana the President of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Araffat./s.sh/kled/mt/sh/

    [16] DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER OF ITALY TO VISIT ALBANIA

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA) - The Italian Deputy Minister, Mr. Piero Fasino, will pay a one-day visit in Albania on Thursday, Press Directory near the Foreign Ministry reports.

    During the visit, the Italian Deputy Foreign Minister will meet the Albanian Foreign Minister, Tritan Shehu, Interior Minister Halit Shamata and the Albanian President Sali Berisha.

    Fasino will be invited in an luncheon given by Premier Aleksander Meksi and Foreign Minister Tritan Shehu.

    In the agenda of this visit it is also expected a meeting with representatives of the political parties.

    This is the second visit of Mr. Fasino in Albania. /kled/mt/sh/

    [17] SUDE DECLARES HER COLLAPSE

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA) By Agim Ba�i: The get-rich-quick pyramid scheme "Sude", managed by Maksude Kademi, a 30-year- old Romany gypsy woman, who offered until November returns of up to 100 per cent over two months, declared today at 16:00 her bankruptcy.

    Gathered in the morning, some 3-4000 protesters demanded their money back, according to the promise given by the scheme manager.

    Maksude Kademi interrupted her activity in November, but had often mentioned money returns, and only today she declared her collapse.

    "This is a pyramid scheme that failed. So you have no reason to ask the state to give you money", declared Sude before the crowd of several thousand.

    The riot police kept under control the angry crowd all day long.

    "At least we want to take our money", said most of the people gathered before her flat.

    "I asked for a credit today, but I could not get it", declared the scheme manager Sude, drawing boos and whistles from the demonstrators.

    The angry crowd hurled stones at police forces, who were near the flat of Sude since early in the morning./kled/mt/sh/

    [18] MEETING BETWEEN ALBANIAN AND MACEDONIAN EXPERTS

    TIRANA, JAN 15 (ATA) - A meeting of experts was held recently in the Foreign Ministry in Tirana with a delegation from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

    The Press and Information Directory near the Foreign Ministry reports that they discussed in the meeting about several projects regarding the issue of border and free movement.

    The meetings of experts on these draft-agreements will continue in the future. /jz/mt/sh/
