  • [01] GOLD BELL BACK TO ST. GJERGJI CHURCH

TIRANA, JULY 10 (ATA)- A church bell, 600 kg, with a 60% gold content and the rest made of precious metals, worth $ 15 million was brought back to the old church of Albania, St. Gjergj, in the Puka town, northern Albania, the newspaper Albania said on Wednesday.

The paper says that a team of three Albanian senior officials of Catholic belief obtained the bell from the Court.

The bell had been held for two years by the Tirana court as a material evidence for the conviction of three authors that had stolen it.

The lawyer M.Ndoja had kept secret the place the bell in the court.

The bell was made in Vatican in 1825 and brought to Albania in 1828. It was afterwards installed in the Gjegjan church in Puka. In 1991 the bell was stolen by three citizens, who managed to take it to Kapshtica of Korca to sell it like over 2200 cult objects illegally sold in Greece by thieves, the paper says.

The three thiefs were intercepted and sentenced up to 13 years term.

The gold bell is one of the 1000 bells destroyed by the 50 year old communist regime and one of the 112 bells missing in the years 1989- 1992.

The latest stolen bell is that of the church in Kozara of Berat which was stolen in the summer of 1995. kled/lm/sh/
