    INTRO: THE WOMEN WERE IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT THE WORLD TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ATHENS, GREECE, SATURDAY WITH THE RUNING OF THE MARATHON IN THE MORNING AND FIVE OTHER WOMEN'S GOLD MEDAL EVENTS DURING THE EVENING SESSION. VOA'S STEVE SCHY HAS DETAILS IN THIS REPORT.

    TEXT: HIROMI SUZUKI OF JAPAN HAS WON THE WOMEN'S MARATHON IN A COURSE RECOD TIME OF TWO HOURS, TWENTY-NINE MINUTES AND 48 SECONDS. HER KEY TO VICTORY WAS HER STRENGTH ON THE HILLS OVER THE TOUGH 42 KILOMETER, 195 METER COURSE.

    ANA FIDELIA QUIROT OF CUBA OPENED SATURDAY EVENING'S COMPETITION BY WINNING THE 800 METER GOLD MEDAL IN ONE MINUTE 57-POINT-ONE-FOUR SECONDS. IN THE LONG JUMP, LIUDMILA GALTINA OF RUSSIA HAD THE LONGEST LEAP IN THE WORLD THIS YEAR -- SEVEN-POINT-ZERO-FIVE METERS -- TO CAPTURE THE GOLD.

    TRINE HATTESTAD OF NORWAY WON THE GOLD IN THE JAVELIN THROW WITH A TOSS OF SIXTY-EIGHT METERS SEVENTY-EIGHT. IN THE FIVE THOUSAND METERS EVENT, ROMANIAN GABRIELA SZABO USED A BURST OF SPEED IN THE LAST 100 METERS TO TAKE THE GOLD.

    AND IN THE ANXIOUSLY AWAITED FOUR-BY-ONE HUNDRED METER RELAY, THE UNITED STATES TEAM TOOK THE GOLD MEDAL IN A CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD 41-POINT FOUR-SEVEN SECONDS. GAYLE DEVERS WHO RAN THE ANCHOR LEG SUMMED IT UP FOR THE TEAM.

V-O-A'S VICTOR BEATTIE REPORTS WHILE MR. HOLBROOKE ACHIEVED SOME MOMENTUM IN THE PEACE AGREEMENTS HE ENGINEERED, HE ACKNOWLEDGES IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DAYTON PEACE ACCORDS IS BEHIND SCHEDULE:
