INTRO: TURKISH PRESIDENT SULEYMAN DEMIRAL IS IN CHINA FOR A FIVE-DAY VISIT AIMED AT BOOSTING CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC TIES BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. AS V-O-A'S STEPHANIE HO REPORTS, THE TWO SIDES SIGNED SEVERAL AGREEMENTS COVERING TAXATION ISSUES AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMS.

TEXT: IN A MEETING AT BEIJING'S GREAT HALL OF THE PEOPLE TUESDAY, CHINESE PRESIDENT JIANG ZEMIN TOLD MR. DEMIRAL THE TWO COUNTRIES HAVE A HISTORICAL FRIENDSHIP -- DATING BACK TO THE TIME WHEN TRADERS PLIED THE SILK ROAD THROUGH WHAT IS NOW WESTERN CHINA. THE TURKISH PRESIDENT DISCUSSED BILATERAL AND INTERNATIONAL ISSUES IN MEETINGS WITH CHINESE PREMIER LI PENG AND THE CHAIRMAN OF CHINA'S NATIONAL PEOPLE'S CONGRESS, QIAO SHI, WEDNESDAY.

ACCOMPANYING MR. DEMIRAL ARE MORE THAN 40 TURKISH BUSINESSMEN, WHO HAVE THEIR EYES ON THE GREAT POTENTIAL FOR INCREASING ECONOMIC COOPERATION WITH CHINA. OFFICIAL CHINESE FIGURES PUT TRADE VOLUME BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES LAST YEAR AT NEARLY 650 MILLION DOLLARS.

MEANWHILE, OFFICIALS FROM BOTH SIDES ALSO ATTENDED A CEREMONY IN BEIJING (TUESDAY) TO LAY THE FOUNDATION STONE FOR THE FIRST CHINESE-TURKISH JOINT VENTURE.

THE NEW BEIJING BAYCAN BEFOCO FOODSTUFFS COMPANY LIMITED HAS A CAPITALIZATION OF 14 MILLION DOLLARS AND WILL PRODUCE CHEWING GUM.

TURKEY'S BAYCAN FOODSTUFFS COMPANY HOLDS 80 PERCENT OF THE VENTURE. CHINA'S WINE, DRINK AND FOODSTUFFS IMPORT AND EXPORT COMPANY HOLDS THE REMAINING 20 PERCENT. CONSTRUCTION OF THE VENTURE IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED IN A YEAR.

AN OFFICIAL FROM CHINA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN TRADE SAYS THE JOINT VENTURE IS A GOOD FIRST STEP TOWARD MORE ECONOMIC COOPERATION BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

THE TURKISH PRESIDENT ARRIVED IN BEIJING TUESDAY. HE WILL STOP IN THE CENTRAL HISTORICAL CITY, XIAN, THURSDAY AND VISIT THE EASTERN PORT SHANGHAI, BEFORE LEAVING CHINA SATURDAY. (SIGNED)
