[20] FROM THE COLUMNS... FROM THE COLUMNS... FROM THE COLUMNS...

[21] TERROR RECOGNIZES NO BORDERS BY MUSTAFA BALBAY (CUMHURIYET)

Columnist Mustafa Balbay comments on the terrorist attack in to the US centers. A summary of his column is as follows:

"It is difficult to define the incidents occurring in various US cities. The doomsday which began with the airplane attacks on twin towers in New York, which had become the symbol of world order both in the US and the world, went on with the assault on Pentagon. People and societies who have felt pain of terrorism underline the fact that they are against terrorism wherever it may come from, whatever purpose it may have, and regardless of to whom it is aimed. We repeat this statement once more. Terrorism is a disaster with which no one should be confronted with. It has struck the US citizens and institutions. The first information gathered suggest that the perpetrators are unknown. It is very hard for the terrorist organizations which seem to take the responsibility to carry out such an operation. A terrorist organization at such a great scale is very difficult. Money, technology, intelligence, and qualified personnel are necessary for the execution of such an operation. The first sights of the incidents recalled the Pearl Harbor attack to mind . The American people were not directly faced with terrorism on such a great scale. The incident has shown that terror did not recognize any borders, and those supporting terrorism in one part of the world should bear in mind that it is never known when it will strike others. In a sense, nothing will be the same any more following this attack. The US definition of terrorism will change. We shall witness a different attitude and action both within her borders and in various parts of the world. However, these will not be enough to eradicate terrorism altogether. Terrorist acts may end but terrorism will continue. The main issue is to dry up the sources fostering terrorism. One of these sources is the imbalance between the living standards seen throughout the world. Imbalances stemming from globalization will not have a positive affect on world peace. The attacks experienced in the US show that terror has also globalized. The incident will influence the whole world. The EU, NATO are on alert. We shall also be affected by it. If there is a Middle East connection to it, the effect on us will be much greater. To what extent can the Turkish economy already in a crisis be affected? We hope the officials will take necessary precautions."
