[01] SEZER TO TRAVEL TO ROMANIAPresident Ahmet Necdet Sezer will pay an official visit to Romania on Jun.21-22 at the invitation of Romanian President Ion Iliescu. Romanian Presidential Spokesman, Corina Cretu, said the visit was decided during the tri-partite meeting in Plovdiv, Bulgaria last February. /Turkiye/[02] BUSH SUPPORTS TURKEYConcerning the NATO Summit in Brussels, the Belgian news agency, "Belga," stated US President George W. Bush was supporting Turkey concerning the European Security and Defense Identity (ESDI). The Belga stated, "During the Summit, Turkey has not changed her stance concerning the ESDI. What is more important, Turkey has received the support of US President George W. Bush in relation with the participation in the decision making process of the ESDI. During his speech before the heads of states and governments, Bush pointed out that the ESDI should not have an excluding nature. "In addition, we support the participation of six NATO allies, who are not members of the European Union (EU), (Turkey, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Iceland and Norway)," Bush added. /Cumhuriyet/[03] ECEVIT WARNS ABOUT MACEDONIAPrime Minister Bulent Ecevit relayed his concerns over the terrorist activities in Macedonia at his speech he made in NATO Summit, in Brussels. Ecevit called on Macedonian authorities to take measures for preventing the assaults against the Turks and Albanians living in Macedonia. /Hurriyet/[04] LAW ON ARBITRATION APPROVED IN CONSTITUTIONAL COMMISSIONThe international arbitration bill was approved in the Constitutional Commission. The bill defines the state of being a foreigner which is the primary condition for the application to the international arbitration as follows: The domicile of parties should be in two different countries. At least one of the parties should be a company with foreign investment. The main contract signed by parties or their legal relationship, which are subjected to the arbitration should foresee the transfer of goods or capital from one country to the other. /Milliyet/[05] IMF CALLS FOR SUPPORT OF TURKISH ECONOMIC PROGRAMThe International Monetary Fund (IMF)requested international financial institutions to support the economic program of Turkey. The IMF Deputy Director of Monetary and Currency Department, Carl Johan Lindgren said, "This program is functional and deserves the support of financial circles. The assistance we extended to Turkey is the largest amount compared to her size." State Minister for the Economy, Kemal Dervis, is currently in New York to meet with the representatives of international financial institutions. Dervis will discuss the repayment of syndication credits extended to Turkish banking sector. /Hurriyet/[06] CHHIBBER: "DEAL WITH MARKETS THROUGH A SINGLE AUTHORITY"World Bank Turkey Director Ajay Chhibber said, "Finance sector should be supervised by a single authority and control should be made by one mechanism." Addressing a meeting organized in Istanbul yesterday, Chhibber said a number of organizations, such as the Banking Regulation and Supervision Board, the Treasury and the Capital Market Board have the control on various sections in finance sector. " Stressing the finance sector should be dealt with as a whole, Chhibber said, "The supervision of the sector should be made within a coordination." /Turkiye/[07] FORWARD TRANSACTIONS BEGIN IN FALLThe director of the Capital Market Board (SPK), Dogan Cansizlar, said they will begin to carry out foreign currency based "forward" transactions in the Istanbul Stock Exchange in September 2001. Cansizlar said the floating exchange rates caused an increase in demand for this type of transactions. "The Istanbul Stock Exchange, Takasbank (Clearing Authority), the Capital Market Board and partly the Central Bank will be the main actors in forwarding market. This market will prevent any instability in the exchange rates," said Cansizlar. /Milliyet/[08] KAZAKSTAN REITERATES ITS SUPPORT FOR BAKU-CEYHANKazakstan's Prime Minister Kasim Comert Tokayev told a US envoy that his country was in favor of a Washington-backed Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline route from the oil-rich Caspian Sea region to Turkey, but called for a more accurate analysis of the project's feasibility and cost. "For Astana (the capital of Kazakstan), the Baku-Ceyhan project has always been a strategic one. Without Kazakstan's participation, this project looks rather problematic," Tokayev said at a meeting with US State Department envoy Steven Mann, parts of which were shown on Kazak television. /Turkish Daily News/[09] TURKEY-GEORGIA MIXED ECONOMIC COMMISSION MEETINGThe 3rd term meeting of the Turkey-Georgia Mixed Economic Cooperation will start today in Tbilisi. According to the statement issued by the Foreign Trade Undersecretary, the Turkish delegation will be headed by the State Minister Abdulhaluk Mehmet Cay and the Georgian delegation will be headed by the Food and Agriculture Minister David Kirvalidze. During the meetings the delegations will tackle issues including the development of the mutual commercial relations, cooperation in the energy sector, the improvement of the checkpoints on the Turkish-Georgian border. /Turkish Daily News/[10] NORTHERN WATCH EXTENDEDThe ministerial memorandum concerning the extension of Operation Northern Watch has been submitted to the parliament speaker. According to the memorandum signed by Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, the Northern Watch Operation, composed of American and British air force elements that conduct reconnaissance and preventative flights over northern Iraq, will have its mandate extended by another six months. /Turkish Daily News/SEVEN STARS 2001 MILITARY EXERCISE STARTS A Turkish military unit will participate in the "Seven Stars 2001 Exercise" to be held in the Korean region in Bulgaria within the scope of the "Southeastern European Multinational Peace Power," and has departed for Bulgaria from the Kapikule border gate, Anatolia reported on Wednesday. The first company, comprising 21 officers, 20 noncommissioned officers, 175 private soldiers, 216 personnel and 70 vehicles arrived in Bulgaria to participate in the military maneuvers. /Turkish News/ A400M GIANT TRANSPORT PLANE PROJECT REACHES CONTRACT STAGE Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), which joined the ranks of leading aerospace manufacturers with the F-16s it builds under license, is one of eight countries' aerospace companies that are going to take part in the manufacture of the Airbus A400M Giant Transport Aircraft of the Future project, which has now reached contract stage, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. The participating countries are expected to sign the relevant contracts with the Airbus Military Company this month. Turkey is to produce 26 of the 225 units on initial order and TAI has stepped up efforts to win and even larger share of the production. /Turkish Daily News/ GARANTI AND AKBANK IN 138.7 MILLION EURO LOAN Private lender Garanti Bank said Wednesday it was leading a 138.7 million euro syndicated loan together with Akbank to finance a water pumping project. Akbank's branch in Malta and Garanti Bank's branch in Luxembourg are the coarrangers of the syndicated loans. The water project is part of Turkey's hydroelectric and irrigation development, known as the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP). It is envisaged that 47,368 hectares of land will be irrigated in Sanliurfa's Bozova district when the project is completed. /Turkiye/ [11] TURKEY AND NIGERIA TO BOOST ECONOMIC TIESThe Turkish-Nigerian Joint Economic Commission meeting was held in Ankara yesterday. State Minister Edip Safter Gaydali headed the Turkish delegation and the Nigerian State Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs Dubem Onyia represented the Nigerian delegation.Gaydali said trade volume between the two countries has reached annually $172 million which does not reflect the real potential between the two countires and placed great importance on setting up a joint business council between the two countries. Onyia said Turkey was located in a very strategic region and trade with Turkey would be beneficial to his country.He also called on Turkish businessmen to invest in Nigeria. /Turkish Daily News/[12] TURKISH TERM OF VISUAL AND AUDITORY EUREKATurkey has taken on the 2002 term presidency of the Visual-Auditory Observatory for the second time, Anatolia reported on Wednesday. It was pointed out in a written statement by the Ministry of Culture that Turkey is the first country which has taken the term presidency consecutively, for the second time, in the history of these institutions. It was also pointed out that 50th Coordinators Committee of the Visual-Auditory Eureka and European Visual-Auditory Observatory meetings were held in Ce�me on May 31 and June 1, and that it was concluded that a training program providing a self improvement chance for screen-writers will be held in Istanbul in September. /Turkish News/[13] "TOURISM OF THE FUTURE" TO BE DISCUSSEDOne of the biggest and most important tourism magazines in Europe, FVW, will organize a congress titled "Tourism of the Future", during which the Turkish tourism will be evaluated. Chief Adviser to Oger Tourism and the Secretary General of Tour Operators Association, Huseyin Baraner, said they wanted Turkish tourism to be among the top ten of the world. Baraner said during the conference, the necessary precautions to be taken for Turkish tourism's success will also be discussed. The congress will be attended by the tour operators and the representatives of airlines companies and the travel agencies and will be held in Wiesbaden, Germany on 29-30 September. /Cumhuriyet/[14] "VISIT TURKEY AND LIVE YOUR DREAMS"German journal "Der Spiegel" elected the advertisement of Turkey with a slogan "Visit Turkey and Live your Dreams" prepared by the Ministry of Tourism as a perfect tourism promotion work. /Milliyet/[15] ISTANBUL HOSTS INTERNET WORLD FAIRThe "Internet World Fair" which is a famous international sector activity, will be held in Istanbul between November 15 and 17. The fair, that has been organized for the last 10 years in 30 cities, including New York and London, has been registered by the Ministry of Culture as the only official Internet fair in Turkey. The fair, funded by the Turkish Computer Sector Association, Penton Media and ITF, aims to contribute to the rapidly developing Internet economy, and to unite the professionals in the sector. Many subjects will be included in the activities of the fair, such as free training and information programs in Internet vision, new media and marketing, and hands-on Internet use. /Turkish News/[16] ISRAELI FILM FESTIVAL BEGINSSecond Israeli Film Festival, jointly organized by the Turkish Ministry of Culture, Ankara Cinema Association and the Israeli Embassy, will be held in Ankara between 14-17 June and then in Istanbul on 21-24 June. During the festival, in which mostly the problems concerning the victims of war and emigrants will be touched upon, five long and four short films will be shown. /Cumhuriyet/[17] PROF. SAGLAMER RECEIVES HONORARY ARCHITECTURAL DOCTORATE FROM CARLETON UNIVERSITYThe president of the Istanbul Technical University, Prof. Gulsun Saglamer, will receive today a honorary architectural doctorate from the Carleton University, Canada.
