    Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.

    [01] TURKEY AND RUSSIA UNDERLINE RESPECT FOR TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY

    Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller on Wednesday said that Turkey and Russia were two important countries cooperating in their region, adding that this was a vital point with respect to the maintenance of peace. Following her meeting with Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin in Moscow, Ciller said that Turkish-Russian relations had been taken up in detail during the talks.

    Ciller later met Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeni Primakov, with whom she signed a protocol for cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Addressing a joint press conference with Primakov Ciller said Turkey would not allow NATO's posing a threat against Russia. Ciller visited Moscow Mayor Yuri Lujkov and signed a protocol of good intentions related to a project which will facilitate the entrance of small and medium sized Turkish enterprises into the Russian market. Ciller said the project, financed by Eximbank, involved the construction of a Turkish trade center in Moscow, where Turkish products would be distributed to the Russian market wholesale./Sabah/Hurriyet_

    [02] FAO DIRECTOR-GENERAL ON OFFICIAL VISIT TO TURKEY

    The Head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Dr.Jacques Diouf, will arrive in Turkey today for a two-day visit to exchange views with officials here. Diouf will call on President Suleyman Demirel, with whom he met during the President's visit to Italy last September.

    Diouf will have wide range consultations, including the minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the minister of Forestry, state minister responsible for GAP, state minister responsible for Women's Affair, foreign ministry undersecretary and other officials./All papers/

    [03] $ 50 MILLION TO TRNC

    Turkey extended $ 50 million aid to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in 1996. For the last 20 years Turkey sent $ 378 million financial aid to the TRNC. TRNC officails announced that % 55 of the aid was used for investments and % 45 of it was used for defence expenses./Hurriyet/

    [04] RECONNAISANCE FORCE INSTEAD OF POISED HAMMER

    A new force, formed instead of the Poised Hammer, will conduct the "reconnaisance and prevention" mission. During the meetings held in Ankara, Turkey, America, Britain and France agreed on the basic principles of the new force. The new force will be approved by the Turkish Parliament. Discussion will continue tomorrow. /Sabah/

    [05] MEDAL OF MERIT TO FOREIGN PROFESSORS

    President Suleyman Demirel gave medals of Merit to German Prof. Anne-Marie Schimmel, Prof. Rupert Wilbrandt and Austrian Prof. Wilhelm Leitner regarding their efforts to promote Turkey. Demirel said: "These three distinguished professors has carried Turkish arts and culture to international platform."/Sabah/

    [06] PARLIAMENT ACCEPTS 1997 BUDGET

    The draft budget law for the 1997 financial year was accepted yesterday at the Parliament's General Assembly. After the voting Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan expressed his gratitude to the deputies for their support and noted that after 50 years for the first time a balanced budget was accepted. /Hurriyet/

    [07] RAFSANCANI VISITS TURKEY

    Iranian President Ali Ekber Hasimi Rafsancani arrives today in Ankara upon the official invitation of President Demirel. Rafsancani is accompanied by a crowded delegation of top level political and economic officials. Rafsancani's programme includes a visit to the GAP region./Sabah/

    [08] SOCIAL SECURITY IN BELGIUM

    According to a statement by the Labour Ministry, Belgium has agreed to extend the limits of the social support given to Turkish workers living in Belgium. A new administrative agreement related to the implementation of the 1968 social security accord between Turkey and Belgium was signed in Brussels last week. /Cumhuriyet/

    [09] BALANCE OF STRUGGLE AGAINST PKK

    During the last ten years in operations in southeastern Anatolia, more than 13 thousands of PKK terrorists have been killed. Nearly 4,000 members of the security forces also lost their lives in the clashes. Arms confiscated in the operations cost approximately TL 150 trillion. Approximately 5 tons of drugs have been found in PKK shelters during this period. /Cumhuriyet/
