"There is hope as long as these procedures are monitored" Nevzat Yalcintas said. Yalcintas, who went to Jeddah on Friday, delivered a message from President Suleyman Demirel to Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz, asking for a halt to the executions of Turks charged with smuggling Captagon. The Crown Prince, who headed a session of the Council of Ministers on the issue, instead of King Fahd, in his statement, praised the freedom of integration of Saudi Arabian justice system and said: "We will continue to behead those who smuggle drugs in our country". On the other hand, President Demirel said: "This issue will be solved if he has mercy on these people and lets them serve their prison sentence in Turkey". /Cumhuriyet/
[02] CILLER SENDS CONDOLENCES TO INDIAN PM RAOPrime Minister Tansu Ciller sent a message of condolence to the Prime Minister of India, P.V.Narasimha Rao. She expressed her deep sorrow and her sympathy for the families of the many victims of the recent train accident.
[03] FOREIGN MINISTERS OF IRAN, TURKEY AND SYRIA TO MEETA tripartite meeting of the foreign ministers of Iran, Syria and Turkey will be held in Esfahan, Iran, on September 7. The latest developments in Iraq will be the main subject of the discussions. It is expected that Damascus, Ankara and Tehran, which are all concerned about the efforts being made to establish a Kurdish state in northern Iraq, will again stress the need to preserve Iraq's territorial integrity. Regular tripartite meetings between the three neighbouring countries were set up after the Gulf War. /Cumhuriyet/
[04] INTELLECTUALS LEND MORAL SUPPORTA group of Turkish intellectuals now in Bosnia said that they were "giving moral support" to the battered people of the region. In Bosnia as part of an aid campaign for the Bosnians, the group of writers, journalists, artists and others are touring camps and other important places. The latest report from the group of 58 people in the tour has come from Tuzla where they held a number of round table discussions with fellow intellectuals. The group will visit Travnik and Mostar today and return to Turkey on Wednesday. /All papers/
[05] NEW MOVES FOR TURCO-GREEK FRIENDSHIPAccording to President Clinton's strategic advisor, George Stephanopoulos, Washington is setting up new initiatives to bring Turkey and Greece together. During talks with Prime Minister Ciller yesterday at the waterside Ciragan Palace, Stephanopoulos said that Clinton was eager to see a new deal between Turkey and Greece that would bring a new stability to the region. Other matters taken up during the visit of Stephanopoulos included the pipeline project for transporting Azeri early petrol overland to Turkish port facilities, Israel, Iraq, Turkey-Greece tensions, Bosnia and other regional issues. /Sabah/
[06] PKK ATTACKS KDP VILLAGESKurdish militants fighting Turkey have attacked two villages in northern Iraq in an area run by the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), a KDP official said yesterday. KDP representative in Ankara Safeen Dizai said militants of the PKK terrorist organization attacked Kani Masi and Bamerni in northern Iraq a week ago. He said three villagers were kidnapped and their fate remained unknown. /Hurriyet/
[07] CETIN MEETS CHINESE OFFICIALDeputy Prime Minister Hikmet Cetin received General Secretary Luo Gang of the People's Republic of China yesterday. "Turkey and China are both inheritors of a strongly-rooted civilization" Cetin said during the meeting. "They are both important in their own region, possess a dynamic economy, and are developing rapidly". Turkey would be pleased to cooperate with China, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, especially in order to solve the Bosnia problem, Cetin added. Luo, in turn, said that China aimed to establish long-term relations with Turkey, which would be less difficult now as the two countries were of the same opinion on many international issues. "We want bilateral relations to proceed to a new stage in the 21st century" Luo Gang concluded. Relations between the two countries improved rapidly after Turkey officially recognized China in 1971.
[08] FOCUS MAGAZINE: THREE ARRESTED GERMANS ARE PKK SUPPORTERSThe German weekly newsmagazine, Focus, claims in a recent article that three of the seven Germans who were recently briefly detained in Diyarbakir were members of the German-Kurdish Friendship Association in Barunschweig as well as being supporters of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The magazine named the three as Uwe Oetken (32), Ann-Kristin Kowarsch (21) and Jeannie Weigel (20).
[09] ISRAELI HEALTH MINISTER TO ARRIVE IN TURKEYDr.Ephraim Sneh, the Israeli Health Minister, is coming to Turkey in the near future. He is coming with the purpose of trying to obtain credits for a project concerning the use of medical photography instruments in Turkey.
[10] PETROL OFFICE IN CENTRAL ASIAThe Petrol Office is getting ready to make new investments in Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. The Petrol Office, which will set up factories to process mineral oil in both countries, will open petrol stations in city centres. Noting that a delegation from the Petrol Office (PO) will go to these countries next week, PO General Director Korel Aytac said: "Costs will be determined according to capacities. In return for factories, we can get fuel oil or establish partnerships". /Milliyet/
[11] $2 BILLION CREDIT FOR GAPForeign credits worth $2 billion have been extended so far in support of the Southeast Anatolian Project (GAP), and an important part of the credit has already been used. According to the Department for Administration of GAP Regional Development, even though the project is mostly financed with domestic resources, some wide-scope GAP undertakings have been realized with the help of foreign aid and foreign credits. Some undertakings with primary importance for the GAP project such as the Ataturk Dam and hydroelectric power station, the Karakaya Dam and hydroelectric power station, the Batman project, as well as some medium size construction works have been completed with the utilization of foreign credits. /Cumhuriyet/
[12] HELP FOR TURKISH WOMENThe Moscow-based international information center "Woman and Earth" trying to find global solutions to the problems of women all over the world, will be also able to help Turkish women. The center will organize conferences and seminars in Turkey to gather information about the social and economic conditions of Turkish women and will include the results of the research in its data bank. As a result, the center will be able to provide some helpful suggestions about the problems of women in Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/
[13] MEETING ON RIGHTS OF BALKAN WOMENA Balkan Solidarity Meeting on human rights for women, organized prior to the UN Conference on Women that will be held in Beijing in September, started yesterday in Thessalonika. Turkish women are represented by State Minister Aysel Baykal. Deputies from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania are also participating in the meeting. /Cumhuriyet/
[14] "DR.SADIK AHMET PEACE AWARD"The Western Thrace Turkish Cooperation Association has decided to present a "Dr.Sadik Ahmet Peace Award" every year in order to commemorate and to keep alive his ideas. Press members who have been to visit Western Thrace, will be given Dr.Sadik Ahmet Peace Awards during a ceremony at the International Press Center on 30 August. /Hurriyet/
[15] TURKISH SILVER EXPOSITION IN BIJORHCAAt the world famous "Bijorhca Fair", which will be held in Paris between 1-5 September, silver goods and jewellery from Turkey will be exhibited. Turkish businessman, Nuri Terzioglu, who is going to attend the fair, which has been running since 1930, said that his aim was to find new markets for Turkish silver ware. /Milliyet/
[16] TURKISH DELEGATION IN MONGOLIAA first term Joint Economic and Trade Committee Meeting (KEK) between Turkey and Mongolia has started in Ankara. State Minister Nafiz Kurt, in his opening speech, said that they wanted to develop trade and commerce between the two countries. /Cumhuriyet/
[17] MAJOR EXHIBITION OF WORLD PRESS PHOTOS TO OPEN IN ANKARAA plethora of press photographs, 30,000 of them, taken by 3,000 press photographers, will be on exhibit in Ankara from August 24 to September 12. The exhibition, sponsored by the Press Photo Reporters' Association and the Ankara metropolitan municipality, will be held at the Zafer Carsisi shopping centre of Ankara. /Cumhuriyet/
[18] TOURISTS CONTINUE POURING INTO ANTALYAOfficials from the Directorate of Antalya Airport said that 982,000 tourists have arrived in Antalya on 7,990 flights since the beginning of this year. The month of July, with 2,425 arrivals, has been named the 'golden month'. Airport spokesmen added that European tourists made up the majority, followed by tourists from Israel, Russia and the Turkish-speaking republics. The hotel and holiday village owners and managers are very pleased that their hotels are operative at full capacity. In addition, the guest houses and social facilities of state-owned institutions have been and will continue to be full throughout the summer.END |
