APRIL 13 1997 DAY

NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

VUKOVAR - The elections in the Serbian District of Eastern Slavonija, Baranja and Western Srem, are taking place under very unfavourable conditions, because many eligible voters were not registered in voters lists and many polling stations were not provided with the complete electoral material. In a protest lodged with the UN administrator, general Jacques Klein, the president of the Executive Committee of the District and president of the Independent Democratic Serbian Party, Vojislav Stanimirovic, demands that UNTAES energetically reacts and immediately correct all omissions, in order not to risk the validity of the elections.

VUKOVAR - A real chaos was reported at the polling stations throughout the Srem-Baranja District, and polling stations are practically blocked because Croat and UNTAES representatives did not provide the ballots on time, and because of incomplete voters lists. In the paragraphs 6 and 4 of the electoral rules it stays that "In the District under UNTAES control, signs political parties or national and civic symbols, flags and other emblems are banned", despite of which there are evident labels with Croatian arms of coats on the voting boxes.

VUKOVAR - The UN modified the electoral rules, thus allowing the Serbs from the Srem-Baranja District who were not registered on voters lists, if they possess Croatian documents.

SARAJEVO - The president of the B-H Presidency from Republika Srpska (RS), Momcilo Krajisnik, met in the National Museum in Sarajevo with the head of the Roman Catholic Church, John Paul II. The topics of the separate nine- minute talks of three Presidency members with Pope were not announced.

SARAJEVO - During the visit to the Muslim part of Sarajevo this weekend, the head of the Roman Catholic Church evaded the assassination, claims Reuters. Media reports, according to which Federal police yesterday arrested several members of a fundamentalist terrorist group, were not confirmed by official services.

ROME - The chair of the B-H Presidency, Alija Izetbegovic welcomed Pope yesterday at the Sarajevo airport with a military beret on his head, which is in no way a good sign for peace in B- H, writes the most influential Italian paper "Corriere dela Sera". The paper writes that "Bosnia remains deaf to Pope's claims "never war" and his calls on "forgiveness and end of hostilities".

BERLIN - The German daily paper "Welt" quotes Cardinal Vinko Puljic that "the Muslims rule" in Sarajevo and that "there is no place for the Croats in the city, which is not multinational or multiconfessional city anylonger".
