[05] FOOD MUST BE CHEAPER
Head officials of the largest trading companies in Serbia, gathered in the
branches coordination team for domestic trade, at their meeting yesterday
in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, gave their support to the
strategic economic orientation for this year and underlined that the
designed target of zero inflation is real, with the necessary lowering of
prices. In order to achieve a zero inflation, it is necessary first of all
to have further liberalization of the entire foreign trade regime, as a
precondition for lowering of prices, suppression of monopolies and a better
range of goods. Our prices are considerably higher than the world ones and
they must take a downward trend, especially in the case of food products.
Liberalization of the foreign trade regime is not only a condition for the
admission in the World Trade Organization, said the Republican Minister of
Trade Srdjan Nikolic, but also for a more efficient solution of problems on
the domestic market. At the meeting it was emphasized that actually in this
economic branch there will be the fastest change of the real ownership
structure.
