[01] DEVELOPMENT OF COMPREHENSIVE BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES
Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic received Mr.
Vatslav Claus - heading the Czech state delegation on an
official visit to FR Yugoslavia. During the meeting,
particular attention has been dedicated to the
enhancement of the bilateral relations and cooperation
between Yugoslavia and the Czech Republic, and the
mutual interest to renew and intensely re-develop of the
multilateral ties between the two countries. Based on
the real interest of business partners to intensify the
business cooperation in industry, transports,
agriculture, tourism and other spheres, it has been
remarked that the formulation of concrete agreements
should be promoted, since this will be the best
expression of the overall positive development of mutual
relations. During the meeting it has also been said that
Mr. Claus' official visit, and his objective stands
concerning the current problems in former Yugoslavia
will contribute to create stronger and more intense
links in the European region.
"I have come to do something positive for the
Czech-Yugoslav relations after a period of nearly three
years when practically no cooperation existed. I have
therefore come to demonstrate our desire to renew our
traditionally good relations." - said the Czech Premier
in an interview for Serbian Broadcasting Corporation.
During the talks with Yugoslav officials, issues
concerning the Yugoslav crisis have been discussed and
certain experiences regarding the separation between
Slovakia and the Czech Republic have been compared - Mr.
Claus said, stressing that due to its own experience,
his country is particularly sensitive to the events in
former Yugoslavia. (Politika, March 5, 1996)
[02] SERBIA - LAND OF FUTURE
The political stability of Serbia, confirmed by the
congress of the Socialist Party of Serbia, is quite
welcome in the current efforts for the settlement of the
Bosnian war, state diplomatic circles in Paris. These
same sources also affirm that the stability is important
because Belgrade has a leading role in the peace
process. The overwhelming support given to President
Milosevic and his policy, ensures a dependable
continuity of government, which is what official France
endorses. Although commentaries about the congresses of
foreign political parties are uncommon in France, the
newspapers report about the results of the SPS congress
and stress the "key role" of President Milosevic in the
peace process. The congress of the Serbian socialists
confirms that Serbia will continue to contribute to the
mitigation of the effects of the crisis in former
Yugoslavia, and that it now "faces the future" - state
the French newspapers. (Borba, March 5, 1996)
[03] REGIONS ARE THE TIES BETWEEN THE MINORITIES
Mr. Bosko Perosevic - Vice President of the Socialist
Party of Serbia, met yesterday in Novi Sad with Mr.
Virgil Popu - Vice President of the Romanian
Social-Democratic Party, and Mr. Dan Poemaru - member of
the Executive Council of the same party. During the
talks it has been stressed that Romania and Serbia, as
two European states, and the ruling parties endorse the
strengthening of the cooperation and good inter-ethnic
relations, based on common interests. The rights of the
ethnic minorities in the Serbian Province of Vojvodina,
including those of the ethnic Romanians - in the sphere
of culture, education, information and traditions - are
affirmed in everyday life, and the Socialist Party of
Serbia (SPS) dedicates great attention to this issue.
The guests from Romania praised the modern and effective
approach used by SPS and its European orientation, and
suggested that inter-party cooperation should be
enhanced. (Borba, March 5, 1996)
[04] NO CONDITIONS FOR THE RETURN OF THE REFUGEES
Serbian Commissioner for Refugees - Ms. Bratislava
Morina received Ms. Margaret O'Keefe - Head of the UNHCR
Mission in FR Yugoslavia. Speaking about the meeting of
the international group for humanitarian issues, due in
Oslo on March 8, Ms. Morina endorsed the UNHCR stand
that the Croatian authorities should not condition the
return of the Serbian refugees with the normalization of
the relations with FR Yugoslavia. During the talks
support has been given to the efforts of the Serbian
Commissariat for Refugees to help the refugees currently
living in Serbia to return to Bosnia - in accordance
with their wishes. The meeting also reaffirmed the
importance of a census of the refugees, so that future
international humanitarian aid might be based on the
real number of refugees in Serbia - 650.000 according to
latest data. (Borba, March 5, 1996)
[05] COMPETITION FOR SCIENTIFIC PROJECTS
Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Science
and Technology stated that after the third competition
basic research projects in science and technology from
1996 to 2000, 251 applications have been accepted.
During the meeting with the representatives of the
Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Serbian
National Society (Matica Srpska), the Deans of the
Serbian universities, the representatives of research
institutions, Dr. Unkovic said that more than 9.000
experts will be involved in research projects, whilst
strategic technological research will encompass 7.000
scientists. Last year, the Ministry of Science and
Technology helped 1.442 scientists and experts to attend
international meetings, and purchased scientific
literature for 50 major public libraries in Serbia. In
the past three years, 1.034 young researchers have been
given state grants, and 400 have been given a permanent
position. Dr. Unkovic also reminded that 253 companies
and 12 institutes have been involved in the quality
system enhancement project. (Politika, March 5, 1996)
[06] GENERAL DJUKIC INDICTED
Colonel-General Djordje Djukic of the Bosnian Serb Army
(VRS), appeared yesterday before the Hague Tribunal for
Crimes of War in Former Yugoslavia (for the first time
as the accused) to hear the indictment. According to the
Chairman of the Hague Tribunal - French Judge Claude
Geordais, Gen. Djukic is suspected of helping the
preparation and planning of VRS operations as deputy
commander for logistics of the VRS Command and member of
the General Headquarters. "I have understood the
indictment, but I do not feel guilty because I have done
nothing that would justify my presence before this
court. The accusations applied against me could be used
against any soldier in the war, and citizen of the
Republic of Srpska or any other country that was present
in Bosnia and in Republic of Srpska territory during
this conflict." - said general Djukic. (Borba, March 5,
1996)
[07] SARAJEVO - A NEW CRACK IN THE FEDERATION
Moslem Radio Sarajevo reports that Mr. Ante Zelic -
Chairman of the Sarajevo Municipal Board of the Croatian
Democratic Community (HDZ), threatened during a
Municipal Council meeting yesterday, that all remaining
Croats will leave Sarajevo if the city of Sarajevo is
transformed into a new canton without HDZ approval. "The
fact that Croats are being ignored as a federal partner,
will inevitably cause their exodus from this city." -
warned Mr. Zelic and added: "I am afraid that Sarajevo
might become a bigger federal problem than Mostar even
on the level of international relations." Mr. Zelic -
currently the Chairman of the Sarajevo Municipal Council
- stressed that the creation of the Sarajevo canton goes
against the Constitution of the Moslem-Croatian
Federation and that Dayton Agreement. (Vecernje Novosti,
March 5, 1996)
[08] TUDJMAN IS DESECRATING JASENOVAC
After the decision by Croatian President Franjo Tudjman
that the remains of the Ustashi killed in World War II
be buried in the Ustashi concentration camp Jasenovac,
the Banjaluka Association of camp-inmates from
Jasenovac, Stara Gradiska, children camps Sisak,
Jastrebarsko and Gornja Reka and camp-inmates from the
1991-1995 war, issued a public letter of protest. "The
resting place of the victims of the Ustashi genocide is
to be desecrated by burring the assassins along with
their victims. This is a cynical and monstrous plan
conceived by Mr. Tudjman and the ruling HDZ party." -
reads the letter. "The Croatian authorities are still
barbarously destroying and deleting all traces of
Ustashi crimes, and repeating the genocide with brutal
terror, murders, massacres and mass exile of the Serbs."
stressed the former camp-inmates protesting against the
attempts made by given international media to
misrepresent the resistance of the Serbian people as
aggression. (Borba, March 5, 1996)
