  • [01] Cabinet session in Bucharest

    Special session in Bucharest ended in the decision to increase lowest salary to one million lei and with a new estimation of the food basket per family which is now approximated at a little more than one million lei per month per person which would mean a total of close to three million per month for the average family in this country. Other maintenance costs would enhance the minimum cost of life more. The Cabinet decided to pay home maintenance costs for the poorest families all over the country if those families have already paid debts of last summer. Ways and means are to be found speedily.

    The Government of Romania also adopted some measures providing for the granting of a credit worth five million USD to the Metallurgical Plants of Hunedoara to modernize one of the steel producing factories and banking guarantees to some other important metal producing plants of the area.

    [02] Note of the Cabinet of Romania

    The Prime Minister of this country, Mugur Isarescu, said he would inform the European Commission of the fact that one of the electoral leaflets of the Social Democracy Party of Romania - PDSR -disseminated false information according to which the economic growth of Romania would have been of -3.2 per cent this year. Actually the economic growth of this country is in the positive this year reading 2.1. The info printed actually referred to last year.

    [03] Ministry of Finance of Romania to appeal decision

    The Romanian Finance Ministry contests the decision of the Court of Appeal of Bucharest regarding the dismissal of Customs Manager, Nini Sapunaru. Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes dismissed Nini Sapunaru last week motivated by the fact that the latter did not have appropriate financial, economic and customs protection education. The decision of Finance Minister Remes was appealed by Sapunaru who won the appeal. It is now the turn of Remes to go to the Supreme Court of Justice that either sanctions the verdict of the Bucharest Appeal Court or, alternately, tables the decision of the Finance Minister.

    [04] Turkish - Romanian Bank in action

    The Turkish - Romanian Bank branches are working with clients all over the country having the ceiling of 3000 USD per instalment. Companies get money to pay their salaries. It is expected that the entire activity of the Bank goes back to normal shortly.

    [05] Romanian - Dutch accord to cut down carbon-dioxide

    Romanian and Holland signed on Tuesday an accord of cutting down carbon dioxide emission and according to the documents signed by the Dutch minister of economy Annemarie Jorritsma and the Romanian minister of the environment Romica Tomescu, our country will be able to cut down this kind of pollution by five megatons per year following mounting of modernized equipment financed by the Dutch side.

    [06] European Union gives Romania and Bulgaria lists of questions to be answered

    " We have decided to give Romania and Bulgaria lists of questions to be answered regarding visas cancellation and we expect to have these lists answered in a very short interval. We need the answers in order to make a decision in the shortest time possible with positive answers to follow presumably in the first three months of next year. " This in short is the statement of Pierre Moscovici, representative of the European Union French Chairmanship.

    The questions and conditions are not new - added the expansion commissioner Verheugen - and are well known to both Romania and Bulgaria and it is now that the two countries have to answer how they comply with the conditions.

    [07] Romania did not loose credibility in the international arena following the present stage of the negociations with the International Monetary Fund

    This is the statement of the Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, who added that he succeeded to attract new loans on the international money markets. Mr. Isarescu specified that the budget alteration adopted recently would not affect the deficit which was established with the International Monetary Fund of 3.5 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product.

    [08] The seventh edition of the GAUDEAMUS Book Fair

    Wednesday the seventh edition of the GAUDEAMUS Book Fair has started organized by the ROMANIAN RADIO BROADCASTING CORPORATION, ROMEXPO and the ALL Publishing House with the participation of domestic and foreign publishing houses. Participating are 150 publishing houses. 130 new titles are launched. The Fair has a daily magazine.

    Starting next year the GAUDEAMUS Radio Romania book fair participates in the Frankfurt yearly world fair. The President Director-General of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation said that this cultural event is the encouraging testimony of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation interest for culture.

    [09] CALENDAR

    The session of the Supreme Council for the Defense of the Country takes place today with the analysis of the report on the activity of the Supreme Council this year and the way in which this body fulfilled its obligations according to the Constitution and to the laws of the country.

    The National Council for Research of the Archives of former Securitate is to release the list of former informers and collaborators of the communist secret political police that are running for elections on 26 November.

    The Head of the OSCE mission to the Republic of Moldova is paying a visit to Bucharest.

    Mr. William Hill is here at the invitation of Foreign Ministry secretary of state Mihai Razvan Ungureanu.

    Press conference of the Head of General Chiefs of Staff of the Romanian army and the deputy of the Ukrainian Army land forces commander in the town of Iasi.

    Special and extraordinary press conference of the spokesman of CDR - Romanian Democratic Coalition - at the Palace of the Romanian Parliament.

    Meeting of the candidate of the Democratic Party to the office of President of Romania, Petre Roman, with his supporters and fans in the big hall of the National Theater of Bucharest.

    United States Ambassador to Bucharest James Rosapepe and the representative of USAID Fred Kirschstein are key note speakers of the forum entitled A NEW VISION ON ASSOCIATIONS FOR BUSINESS which is organized by the International Center for Private Enterprise and USAID.

    The book fair GAUDEAMUS 2000 which is organized by the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation at ROMEXPO.

    The International Information Fair INFO BUSINESS BUCHAREST the sixth edition unfolds at ROMEXPO these days.
