  • [01] President Emil Constantinescu was congratulated on his birthday

    On the occasion of his birthday, the President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, was congratulated by a large number of people at the Cotroceni Palace. The President received officials, newsmen, war veterans, Kinghts of the MIHAI VITEAZUL Order and ordinary people of the city of Bucharest and from all over the country that came to the Cotroceni Palace to offer their best wishes on the occasion of the birthday of the President of Romania.

    Mr. Constantinescu thanked them all for having been near him all along the four years of presidency and making up a large family. The President told the media: "My relations with the media were always open and transparent and I have nothing against anyone."

    The President then declared that it was the media that tought him to respect journalists.

    To the people of the city of Bucharest and from all over the country the President of Romania said that he was deeply indebted to all those that had confidence in him along the four years of Presidency.

    The guests then watched a film depicting the main moments of the political career of President Emil Constantinescu.

    [02] Statement of the Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu said on Sunday in an address and then as part of a dialog with the citizens of the mining area of Cavnic in county Maramures that the only possibility of giving a new life to mining is retechnologization. According to the Prime Minister it is in this way that labor productivity increases, new work places are created and, at the same time, living standards increase. In another order of ideas, answering numerous questions of the citizens of that locality, the Prime Minister said Pensions are to be increased starting December this year and that the Cabinet of Romania seeks solutions so that pensions are paid in time and purchasing power of pensioners does not go down. Premier Isarescu also visited the towns of Iehud and Sighet.

    [03] PETROBRAZI increases fuel ton prices

    PETROBRAZI oil refinery is increasing price for fuel per ton said the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Radu Berceanu. He added that no increase of prices is to be registered following the increase of the fuel price by the afore mentioned refinery. As part of the same development Mr. Berceanu said he asked PETROBRAZI refinery to increase price of fuels as illegal traffic of fuels had gone on for a long time at PETROBRAZI and that prices were all under the level of the market. Mr. Berceanu also said that measures would not influence the price of gas and Diesel as well as those of other kinds of fuels at the distributing stations. The Minister of Industry and Commerce Radu Berceanu then said rumors according to which increase of prices for fuels at PETROBRAZI could bring about increases at other refineries are not true.

    [04] ASUB puts an end to protest actions

    The Association of Higher Education Students of the Bucharest University ( ASUB ) has put a temporary end to all protest demonstrations and actions until after the general elections in Romania although until now none of the main demands of the Association was met by the officials, namely those requests referring to scholarships, hostels and canteens. The Association, according to the Chairman of the Association, Gabriel Ispas, quote :" made this decision as Romania is not governed now " end quote.

    [05] The Tenth edition of the scientific symposium organized by the Institute of Research of Romanians living in Hungary

    In the town of Gyula at the Cultural Union of Romanians of Hungary the tenth edition unfolds of the Symposium organized by the Research Institute of Romanians living in Hungary. Among the papers presented there we mention EMINESCU AND THE MAGYAR LITERATURE, PRESENT ISSUES OF THE ROMANIAN LANGUAGE, DIVERSITY OF THE ROMANIAN LANGUAGE IN HUNGARY. On the same occasion presented are the publications of the Institute of Research of the Romanians living in Hungary.

    [06] CALENDAR

    The Council for the Research of the Archives of former Securitate (Secret Political Police) are hearing today the candidates for the parliamentary elections that are suspected to have collaborated with the former political police.

    Foreign ministers of the 15 European Union member countries are having talks in Brussels today on new regulations in as far as visas are concerned; it is possible that Romanian and Bulgarian citizens be no longer required visas to the EU members for a six month trial interval when they travel to the Schengen area.

    The Head of the General Chiefs of Staff of the Turkish Army, army general Husseyn Kivrikoglu is paying a visit to Romania in the interval 20 - 23 November.

    United States Ambassador to Romania, James Rosapepe makes a visit to counties Arad and Bihor to inaugurate two projects which are financed by the United States of America.

    The Council of Foreign Investors and the NINE O'CLOCK daily host a round table on the theme THE FUTURE PRESIDENT AND FOREIGN INVESTMENTS at HOTEL HILTON in the Diplomats Salon.

    A joint delegation of ANEIR which is the National Association of Exporters and Importers of Romania and of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce leaves for Belgrade and Novi Sad for first contacts between Romania and Yugoslavia after the lifting of the embargo.

    The Romanian Goods Exchange organizes tender for the Rail Road Building Company S.A. that needs to buy all the materials for next year.

    International events at ROMEXPO Exhibition - Info Business Bucharest and Souvenirs.

    Launching of the volume TOUR OF THE CANDIDATES TO THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT OF ROMANIA by journalist Octavian Andronic, at the International Press Center of Elections 2000 at World Trade Center, the New York Auditorium.

    Launching of the volume CONSTRUCTE bu Professor Tudor Catineanu at the Press Center of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation.

    The EURO ATLANTIC Association MANFRED WORNER invites all those interested to attend the launching of the book EXCEPTIONAL SITUATIONS which is signed by Constantin Sava and Constantin Monac.
