[01] Results of general and presidential elections in Romania
Latest communique of the Central Electoral Office of this country reads
that after having received and centralized close to 97 per cent of the
votes cast in the 15,392 polling stations all over Romania first in the
presidentail race is Ion Iliescu with 36.74 per cent of the votes cast,
second is Corneliu Vadim Tudor with 28.45 per cent of the votes. The second
ballot opposes these two contenders.
In as far as the Senate of Romania is concerned results read: PDSR - Social
Democracy Party of Romania with 37.51 per cent of the votes, Greater
Romania Party with 21.07 per cent of the votes, the Democratic Party has
7.64 per cent, the National Liberal Party with 7.49 per cent, the
Democratic Magyar Union of Romania with 6.32 per cent, the Romanian
Democratic Convention 2000 having 5.30 per cent, the Alliance for Romania
4.30 per cent, the National Alliance Party with 1.42 per cent, the Campeanu
- National Liberal Party with 1.21 per cent.
For the Chamber of Deputies of Romania results read: PDSR - Social
Democracy Party of Romania got 37.04 per cent, Greater Romania Party
obtained 19.56 per cent, the Democratic Party 7.09 per cent, the National
Liberal Party with 6.89 per cent, the Democratic Magyar Union of Romania
with 6.22 per cent, the Romanian Democratic Convention 2000 - 5.04 per cent,
Alliance for Romania with 4.11 per cent, the Campeanu-National Liberal
Party 1.39 per cent, the National Alliance Party 1.27 per cent. The other
parties, political groups and alliances obtained under one per cent.
[02] Statements of political personalities
[03] Ioan Mircea Pascu - Social Democracy Party of Romania
The vice - president of this party, Ioan Mircea Pascu said that for the
time being no decision was adopted regarding alliances with other political
parties which are represented in the future parliament of Romania. Mr.
Pascu said there are arguments for and against in all cases while in the
case of cooperation with the National Liberal Party there seem to be
certain advantages in the foreign area while in the country the NLP has a
poorer image. In as far as the Democratic Party is concerned Mr. Pascu said
that party had an ansocial and anti democratic attitude which practically
disqualifies this party. With regard to the Democratic Magyar Union of
Romania, the leadership of PDSR estimates that this political party
represents a partner of negociations and things could develop toward a
future parliamentary bilateral support. The Social Democracy Party of
Romania is ready to cooperate with other political parties and coalitions
as well as with unions of parties and they are now working on it.
[04] Valeriu Stoica - National Liberal Party
The first vice-president of the National Liberal Party Valeriu Stoica told
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that at least for now his party would be in the
opposition being, as it were, the representative of the center-right wing
parties. Valeriu Stoica also said that his party might take into
consideration the alternative of ruling alongside PDSR, the Democratic
Party and UDMR - the Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania. This would be,
Mr. Stoica said, part of a government of national union. However the final
decision would be made by the Permanent Delegation of the Party which will
take place towards the end of this week.
[05] Vice - president of the Democratic Party, Radu Berceanu
The vice-president of the Democratic Party, Radu Berceanu, told RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that according to him his party would be in the
opposition. If PDSR comes forward with proposals that are interesting for
the party and for Petre Roman, then the proposals are to be considered.However
until now PDSR has not yet forwarded any proposal of collaboration.
[06] Corneliu Ciontu, Greater Romania Party
First vice-president of Greater Romania Party, Corneliu Ciontu, quoted by
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI said that his party did not set itself the task
to rule at any price and mentioned that for the time being PRM is not
taking into account any political alliances for a future ruling activity.
However a possible alliance with PDSR would be possible is PDSR asked for
such an alliance. Greater Romania Party would never request an alliance.
[07] Borbely Laszlo, Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania
The Executive vice - president of UDMR said that his party was very much
concerned of the march to power of the Greater Romania Party and voiced his
hope that the Romanian political class would unite to face the danger of
extremism. The UDMR leader said his party would make an alliance or
alliances with that party or with those parties that offer compatible
programmes in as far as reform programmes are concerned as well as issues
and problems specific to the Magyar minority.
[08] Leadership of PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party -
resigned
All the leaders of the Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party
resigned after the failure in the general elections of last Sunday. Ion
Diaconescu said that the transitional forum be convened on Saturday to
designate a commission to lead the party until the elections of next
January.
[09] Statement of the National College for Research of archives of former
Securitate
The National College for Research of Archives of former Securitate delivers
further statements in connection with the lists of persons that
collaborated with former Securitate as secret political police. The college
mentions that we speak of two different categories. The first list includes
persons that were identified as members of the former secret police. This
17 name list is to be published in MONITORUL OFICIAL. There is a second
list which includes 19 persons that had certain links with former
Securitate but whose activity cannot be certified and hence the names are
not to be published by MONITORUL OFICIAL and public opinion is informed of
this.
[10] Report on the development of Romanian economy
On 29 November this year the International Monetary Fund will debate the
report on the evolution of the economy of Romania this year. The document
was drawn by the team of experts that supervised the developments linked to
the latest stand-by agreement of the Fund and of Romania. The report
establishes the fact that in the last two years the economic policy of
Romania has led to the mocro-stabilization from the economic point of view
of the country. The risk of major mistakes is no longer present. The
reforms of the banking systems are considered as positive as are the budget
constructions adopted.
[11] Statement of foreign minister Petre Roman before leaving for Vienna
Minister of foreign affairs Petre Roman left for Vienna to attend the last
ministerial council of OSCE before Romania takes over the chairmanship of
the organization. He said that in the speech he was to deliver in Vienna he
would stress the responsibilities which our country had by the taking over
of chairmanship of OSCE. We quote: "It is my duty to ensure the support
which Romania herself had until now. Romania needs very much to continue
good links with the European Union as well as the strategic partnership
with the United States if we wish to go forward on the path of democracy,
liberty and economic reconstruction" end of quote.
