  • [01] The President of the Democratic Party - PD - about the FNI case

    National Investment Fund - FNI - collapse made a large number of people loose large amounts of money which they invested as the Fund was guaranteed by the Savings Bank which in its turn should be guaranteed by the National Bank of Romania - this has made the President of the Democratic Party, Petre Roman, say that the Prime Minister of the Cabinet of Bucharest, Mugur Isarescu, did not get involved in the case as, as Mr. Roman put it, " Mr. Isarescu did not want to get into controversies with financial institutions ". Mr. Roman was referring to the interval during which the present Prime Minister of Romania was Governor of the Bank of Romania.

    [02] Debate: "How American can be the presidential campaign of Romania"

    The American Cultural Center of Bucharest hosted the debate under that title with the participation of and under the organization of the National Union of Radio Programme Makers, the Association PRO DEMOCRATIA and the Union of Professional Newsmen. Speaking at the meeting was the Chief Executive Officer of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, Dragos Seuleanu, the president of the Association PRO DEMOCRATIA, Cristian Parvulescu, as well as the representative of the DEMOSTHENES Association, Carmen Dumitriu. Also taking the floor were the campaign managers of parliamentary parties of Romania. The meeting decided that the entire electoral campaign for general elections should be monitored and supervized by the three afore mentioned organizations.

    [03] Heroin package captured by the Romanian customs officers

    A package containing a little more than five kgs. of 90 per cent pure heroin was found in one of the trailer lorries crossing Romania on its way to Western Germany. Driver's name is Sayar Ahmet and he is a Turkish citizen while the trailer lorry he was driving was coming from Syria.

    [04] Meeting of the European Commission - Romania regarding yearly report about Romania

    A meeting of the European Commission - Romania took place at the residence in Brussels and it was devoted to the drafting of the yearly report of the commission. Attending was the director general for enlargement, Eneko Landabaru, the head of the team of negociators for Romania, Enrico Pasquarelli, while Romania was represented by Foreign Ministry secretary of state Eugen Dijmarescu. The Romanian side was encouraged by the representatives of the European Commission to go on the road of appropriating European standards. However, the European Commission officials told the Romanian side that there is a large number of Cabinet urgent ordinances which seems to be bigger than the number of bills adopted by the Parliament of the country in as far as European Union regulations are concerned. Mr.Dijmarescu then presented a list of bills to be passed by the Parliament of Bucharest by the end of the year with a view to continue negociations with the European Union for adherence as well as the possibility of opening up new chapters under the Swedish chairmanship.

    [05] Romanian - Finnish talks

    Secretary of state with the Foreign Ministry, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, has had talks with the Finnish minister of defense as part of which they tackled the situation in the Balkans and in the Russian Federation.

    [06] CALENDAR

    For three days in Cyprus, under the organization of the Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE the seminar takes place on the theme COMBATTING CORRUPTION AND ORGANIZED CRIME with the delegation of Romania attending.

    Joint session of the Permanent Bureaus of the two Chambers of the Romanian Parliament.

    The Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Ion Diaconescu is receiving the delegation of the Constitutional Council of France led by Yves Guena, Chairman of the Council.

    The results of the programme CITIZENS AGAINST CORRUPTION will be presented at a round table by Cristian Parvulescu, president of the Association PRO DEMOCRATIA in a report followed by a press conference at which participating is also Valeriu Stoica, minister of justice.

    Ambassador of the United States to Romania, James Rosapepe, is at Resita, to attend the ceremony which is accompanying the signing of all the money documents sanctioning the buying of the Resita Combinat Works by the United States Noble Ventures Corporation.

    The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania and of the Municipality of Bucharest invite all those interested to attend the press conference referring to the XXVI - th edition of the International Bucharest Fair which unfolds in the period 9 - 14 October.

    Princeton University of the United States grants the Awards for Excellence - President's Award - to the Romanian student Radu Mihaescu who got maximum grades at all examans during the last academic and university year.
