  • [01] Petre Roman stands for visa-free trips of Romanians

    At the sympozium with the title NO TO VISAS - BETWEEN DREAM AND REALITY which was held in the town of Alba Iulia, Petre Roman, Romanian foreign minister, said that maintaining compulsory visas for Romanians travelling to European countries is a discriminatory action adding however that Romania itself must cope with a number of problems which we have to solve at home among which the strengthening of border control.

    President of the Democratic Party, Petre Roman, said as part of a press conference that the future ruling coalition - as he sees a coalition form of government - must have the Democratic Party as a major player. Mr. Roman said among other things the following:" we may note now after the local elections which were held in Romania that PD is second after PDSR. We will have to choose valuable partners but however a future coalition team must start out from the principle WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO ", said Petre Roman quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    [03] Romanian and German businessmen have talks here in Bucharest

    A group of German businessmen from the Northern Rheinland - Westfalien are here in Bucharest for talks with Romanian businessmen devoted to the development of the Small and Middle Sized Companies. The meeting is organized by the Consultancy Service of the Cabinet of Romania and it is part of a German project. The German businessmen are interested in the Romanian textile and ready made clothes industries, printing, wood processing, real estate and land improvement.

    [04] Negociations between the Romanian Prime Minister and the delegation of the IMF

    A three hour long round of negociations unfolded at the Victoria Palace, the building of the Romanian Government yesterday, between the Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu and the delegation of the IMF to Romania. They are here to establish the status of the Romanian economy with a view to the second instalment of the stand-by agreement loan to this country.

    The results of the visit and of the talks of the IMF delegation are to be released later today.

    [05] Romania has registered some progress says European enlargement commissioner Gunther Verheugen

    European enlargement commissioner Gunther Verheugen said that the yearly reports will show the progress scored by the countries that are making efforts to join the European Union.

    Mr. Verheugen added that Romania registered some progress at a number of chapters including the problem of institutionalized children but still their situation is difficult and has to be further in the focus. The yearly reports which are to be released on 8 November will also show the links of the former Communist nomenklatura and the privatization process in this country. According to a European Union official in Brussels Romania is the most analyzed country as privatization does not offer equal chances to all investors.

    [06] The military exercise COOPERATIVE KEY 2000

    The United States and Great Britain will further support Romania in her efforts to reform the army and to join NATO. This is what the ambassadors of the two states mentioned before told the press at the BABADAG shooting ground on the occasion of a media and COOPERATIVE KEY 2000 participants meetings. Both James Rosapepe and Richard Ralph said that the Romanian army should more consistently train and prepare with this aim in view.

    [07] The regional forum of power

    The furthering and expansion of the power programme of Romania must take into account the economic aspects alone leaving aside all that may be linked to politics. This is what was declared by the Secretary General of the World Power Council Mr. Gerard Dusset who is also present at the regional forum of power rallying specialists from Europe, America and Asia and which unfolds here in Romania, on the Black Sea Coast, in the Southern resort of Neptun.

    In his turn the Head of the European Commission to Romania, Fokion Fotiadis, said that in Europe there is a powerful antinuclear power plant trend and the countries that may renounce this form of obtaining power will have to get power from countries such as Romania that could produce enough to be exported.

    [08] President of PDSR, Ion Iliescu, is now on a visit to the United States

    The Social Democracy Party leader Ion Iliescu who is now visiting the United States said that the United States should maintain its military presence in the Balkans as the NATO bambardments did not solve the issue of Balkan security in the long run. Mr. Iliescu told WASHINGTON POST that if he would be elected president of Romania he would ask for the passing of bills and laws to favor foreign investments and that he would continue efforts for Romania to join NATO.

    One of the former United Sates Ambassadors to Romania, David Funderburk, told the same newspaper that according to his opinion Ion Iliescu would not be the best choice for the bettering of Romanian - American relations nor for Romania to join NATO.

    [09] CALENDAR

    Fire fighters Day in Romania is observed also by the presence of the Head of the Romanian State, President Emil Constantinescu, at the ceremony of awarding decorations, medals and orders to the oldest fire brigade of Romania, that is stationed in the town of Iasi.

    The Palace of the Romanian Parliament hosts the 15 - th meeting of the Commission for economic, trade, technological and environmental issues of the Parliamentary Asssembly of the APCEMN - Economic Cooperation of the Black Sea Region.

    At the end of their Romanian visit the IMF delegation members are to present the results of the negociations devoted to the granting of the second instalment of the stand-by agreement loan to this country.

    State Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Petre Roman has left for New York where he attends the 55-th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

    Cooperative Best Effort 2000 exercise is inaugurated in the town of Cluj Napoca today in the presence of the Romanian Defense Minister, Sorin Franzaverde and the Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Romanian Army, division general Mircea Chelaru.

    The deputy Defense Minister of the Czech Republic, Jaromir Novotny, who is making a visit to Romania is attending the round table on the theme THE EXPERIENCE OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC IN EURO ATLANTIC INTEGRATION which is organized by the MANFRED WORNER Association and the GEORGE C. MARSHALL ASSOCIATION.

    The United States Ambassador to Romania, James Rosapepe, is now at Oradea at the machine tools plant INFRATIREA for a working visit; he is also a guest in a radio programme broadcast by RADIO TRANSILVANIA.

    The Ministry of Industry and Trade hosts the seventh session of the Committee for Economic Consultations of Romania and Denmark.

    The World Trade Center of Bucharest hosts the press conference organized by the Romanian American Insurance Company SARA MERKUR on its fifth year of activity in this country.
