[02] The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu will not run for second term in office

Going live on radio and television last night the President of Romania Emil Constantinescu said that he would not run for a second term in office at the November 2000 presidential elections. He motivated his decision, among other things, by failure in the struggle against corruption and existing difficulties in the process of economic reforms. The President apologized to all the listeners and viewers of the radio and televized live programme for the promises made which proved futile in the process as no improvement of the living standards has been noticed. Mr. Constantinescu said he would not seek any position with any of the political parties. The address of the President of Romania is placed against the background of the collapse of several banks of this country following fraud. The anti-communist coalition under the leadership of Emil Constantinescu that has been ruling for four years now has lost credibility due to unpopular measures adopted with the aim of reforming economy.

[03] Romanian political party leaders about the statement of the President of Romania

Valeriu Stoica, first vicepresident of the National Liberal Party is of the opinion that the intention of President Constantinescu to withdraw from political life after concluding his term in office without running for a second mandate creates the premises for a reform of the Romanian political class and is part and parcel of the present political game. Mr. Stoica also said that President Constantinescu proved clearsightedness, in this way allowing for a right wing coalition construction with chances to win parliamentary and presidential elections. Mr. Stoica said that two political personalities of outstanding value should be taken into consideration and namely the present Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu and former Prime Minister Theodor Stolojan when the new political construction is being designed and built.

President of UDMR - Union of Democratic Magyars of Romania - Marko Bela said the withdrawal of President Emil Constantinescu from the presidential race is an exceptional action attesting to great political and moral courage. Marko Bela said it was right for the President to assume all shortcomings and failures as the entire ruling coalition is responsible for what is wrong.

UFD - Union of Right Wing Forces of Romania regrets the decision of President Constantinescu but appreciates candidness and courage. President of UFD Varujan Vosganian said that it was a very honorable action which could mean a turning point for the Romanian political life. Vosganian also says that the truths revealed by the statement of the President of Romania should be an occasion of meditation for the Romanian political class and for the public at large at the same time.

PD - the Democratic Party - by its spokesman Dumitru Moinescu declared that the decision of Emil Constantinescu to withdraw from the presidential race is a new kind of decision for the Romanian political class, a decision which gives a new perspective to the political competition in the fall for the parliamentary and presidential elections this year.

[04] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu does not accept the resignation of Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes

In essence the Prime Minister said that he would never agree to let go a very good specialist from the team alongside which he works only because there were reasons outside interests of the Government of Romania that prompted Remes to make the decision to resign from the Cabinet.
