  • [01] Senate proceedings

    The plenum of the Senate resumed in Bucharest yesterday afternoon. The senators accepted the Permanent Bureau proposal to call for a joint session on Thursday in order to adopt the regulations for the National Council expected to examine the archives of the former Securitate. The Senate also decided to delay the decision concerning the report by the mediation commission designated to solve the exisRing controversy around the text in the law enforcing the state and professional secret information. The debates around the differences concerning the law on the foreign citizens' status were also delayed. The Senate's plenum was expected to resume today at 9 AM, debates concentrating on the law concerning the privatisation of state-owned farms (IAS). RADOR

    [02] House of Deputies proceedings

    At their session on Monday, the deputies adopted articles in the law on the personnel of the Constitutional Court. The deputies started the debates around the report of the mediation commission for the law on the foreign citizens' regime in Romania, and adopted the article refering to the temporary stay of the foreigners in the country. According to law, a foreigner, whose visit will exceed a 15-day term, should announce his arrival in three-day time to the local police in case he had no accomodation, the foreigners who are not subject to visa regime excluded. The House of Deputies was expecRed to resume its plenum today at 8:30 AM. RADOR

    [03] General Costica Voicu is the new commander of the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" Police Academy

    At a ceremony on Monday, Gen. Costica Voicu was appointed as commander of the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" Police Academy for a six-month mandate. The appointment was made following an order issued by Interior Minister Constantin Dudu Ionescu. RADOR

    [04] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu met economic ministers

    At the Victoria Palace on Monday morning, Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu had a meeting with economic ministers in order to discuss a series of issues concerning the salaries in state institutions and the status of loss-making enterprises. The ministers decided to adopt measuures designed to reduce the losses and eliminate financial obstacles. The measures are also expected to include a cut in the bonuses to be granted to workers in the stat-owned companies. The ministers also reconsidered a series of measures aimed at turning the current labourRcontracts for an indefinite period of time into labour contracts for a limited period of time. RADOR

    [05] The 150-th anniversary of the first Romanian Chambers of Commerce

    Celebrations on the occasion of the 150-th anniversary of the first Romanian Chambers of Commerce have been taking place in the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca on Monday. Participants included representatives of similar institutions in Europe, and Justice Minister Valeriu Stoica who made a speech before the people gathered in the National Theatre Hall. The Romanian minister has mentioned the legal framework the Romanian businessmen should comply with. Valeriu Stoica pointed out the role the Chamber of Commerce should play in stimulating production and encouraging businessmen in order to achieve a global economic growth and ensure Romania's economic recovery.     [06] Further details about the strike at the nuclear plant in Cernavoda

    Starting from yesterday, the strike at the nuclear plant in Cernavoda was R suspended for 10 days. Trade union leader Ion Monceanu said that further discussions between trade unionists and plant executives were expected to focus on a restructuring programme also including some benefit for the workers. The first such meeting is expected on May 10. RADOR

    [07] New raise in fuel prices

    Starting from last night at 0:00 (local time), SNP PETROM SA operated a new raise in the fuel prices. In Bucharest, the Premium and Super leaded petrol raised at 10,700 lei/litre, the unleaded gasoline raised at 10,800 lei/litre while the gasoline raised at 7,800 lei/litre. Across the country, the new prices vary from 10,600 to 10,700 for leaded petrol, 10,500 to 10, 800 for unleaded petrol, and 7,800 to 8,000 for gasoline. RADOR

    [08] OSCE representative for the freedom of the press, Freimut Duve, on a visit to Romania

    The OSCE representative for the freedom of the press, Freimut Duve, has arrived in Bucharest on Monday for a two-day visit. The OSCE official met RomanianRForeign Minister Petre Roman, the chief commissioners for media and cultural affairs in parliament, NGO representatives and journalists. The talks concentrated on ways to improve the co-operation between OSCE's Romanian presidency in 2001, and the OSCE Office for the freedom of the press. The Romanian minister announced that the city of Bucharest was expected to host the meeting of the OSCE three-member presidency due on July 5. He said that, in his opinion, the issues concerning the freedom of the press should be part of the agenda of the talks in July. RADOR

    [09] Romanian - British consultations on security issues

    Romanian - British consultations on security issues have been taking place in Bucharest on Monday between Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, State Secretary with Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) and the head of the Romanian delegation, and David Manning, the head of the british delegation and state deputy undersecretary for security policies with the British Foreign Office. The Ralks focused on issues concerning recent developments in the region, OSCE, NATO, the identity of the European security and defence, and bilateral military co-operation. State undersecretary David Manning praised Romania's efforts as part of the OSCE's three-member presidency, and reiterated the support Britain was ready to grant in order to help Romania in 2001, when the country becomes OSCE president.
