    The 15 member countries of the European Union have started negociations of accession to the Union of the six new candidates: Bulgaria,Latvia, Lithuania,Malta, Romania and Slovakia. Previously foreign ministers of each of the countries mentioned participated in separate conferences. The programme of accession of Romania to the Union was presented by foreign minister Petre Roman who was received by the permanent representatives of the 15 to Brussels under the chairmanship of the Portuguese foreign minister Jaime Gama. In his address Foreign Minister Petre Roman reaffirmed the will of his country to take action with determination to make up for the delay we have as compared to the countries that have already started negociations in order to adhere to the European Union at the proper moment. The European Commissioner for Accession, Gunther Verheugen said at a press conference after the official start of negociations that Romania must face a difficult and complex process of economic and legislative efforts and added that Romania has the advantage of a powerful political consensus in favour of adherence to the European Union.     [02] Follow-ups of pollution with cianide of the river Danube

    Minister of the Environment Romica Tomescu spoke before the Senate on Tuesday in favour of a fund destined to protect the environment and then told the media that there are chances the European Union allot funds of pre- accession for the removal of the aftermath of the ecological catastrophe which was caused by the AURUL Company of Baia Mare. Mr.Tomescu also said that on Thursday, in the town of Satu Mare, Romanian officials meet with Magyar experts and with the European commissioner for environmental issues to assess damage and seek ways and means of action to limit effects of the accident.     The Hungarian government has not asked the Romanian state for reparations for the damage caused by the pollution with cianide of the rivers Somes, Lapus and Tisa by the AURUL Romanian - Australian Company of Baia Mare said secretary of state with the Hungarian Foreign Ministry Zsolt Nemeth in Bucharest where he met with the secretary of state at the Romanian Foreign Ministry Mihai Razvan Ungureanu. The latter told media that the charge d'affairs of Romania to Belgrade officially received the note of the Serbian authorities regarding the situation of the Yugoslav segments of the rivers Tisa and Dunare and added that Romanian - Yugoslav consultations will soon take place.     [03] Assets of BANKCOOP are being sold

    The Bucharest municipal court, commercial section, designated as liquidator of Bankcoop on Tuesday both Price Waterhouse Cooper Management Consult SRL and SC RECONVERSIE si VALORIFICARE ACTIVE SA. Also on Tuesday the court officially announced Bankcoop of the decision of the National Bank of Romania to declare the first bankrupt. Bankcoop could ask for a retrial within 15 days the decision having to be made by the shareholders that meet on 17 February. R R A - R A D O R.

    Commercial Bank of Romania expresses surprise at the decision of the rating agency MOODY'S regarding the financial power of the bank. This decision has no real support specifies the communique of the Commercial Bank of Romania quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI as the very good financial results recorded at the end of 1999 contradict MOODY'S Agency.     [05] Strike of teachers continue

    Cabinet ministers Mircea Ciumara and Andrei Marga were called before the Senate on Tuesday and presented the situation of the funds allocated by the state budget to education in order to find out solutions for ending the teachers' strike. State Minister Mircea Ciumara said that although the budget is not yet finalized education does receive about 4,2 per cent. Former minister of education, Senator Liviu Maior said the Executive does not have any strategy to successfully end the teachers' strike which most probabluy will continue this week too. The President of the Education Free Trade Unions Aurel Cornea told RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI that the strike of the education personnel continues until the Cabinet enacts a normative act which stipulates the increase of the salaries of the teachers and others working in the education sector and espeacially the increase of the lowest salaries which are very poor.
