  • [01] Conclusion of the United Kingdom visit of President Emil Constantinescu

The President of Romania concluded his visit to the United Kingdom with talks at the BERD with the chairman of that bank Mr. Horst Koller. THE RELATIONS WITH BERD ARE A REAL MODEL said spokesman of the Presidency Rasvan Popescu who was quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI. Among the issues tackled at the Bank are also those involving about 50 projects which are worth 1,4 billion USD. According to the spokesman of the Presidency BERD has the intention to co-finance privatization of big companies such as TAROM and ANTIBIOTICE Iasi.

President Emil Constantinescu reaffirmed in London, at a meeting with British businessmen, that regardless of the person that will be the next President of this country, reforms will continue according to the lwas of the country directed at enhancing the role of private property and decentralization, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

The London visit of the President of Romania ended on Wednesday evening with a press conference during which the Head of the Romanian State said that Romania and the United Kingdom have built a real and stable partnership. Mr. Constantinescu added Great Britain reconfirmed support for Romania's accession to the European Union by technical and economic assistence while the business circles have shown their growing interest in investing in Romania. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports that President Constantinescu recalled that there are 120 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and the United Kingdom and thanked for the very warm welcome extended to him by Queen Elisabeth II-nd and by Prime Minister Tony Blair as well as by the Lord Chancellor who in their turn reaffirmed their support for the efforts of Romania of economic development and Euro - Atlantic integration.

THE TIMES writes at the end of the visit of the President of Romania to the United Kingdom that for the British public opinion Romania was an essential pillar of stability in the area. Sir Michael Beenyan who is the senior editor of THE TIMES said Romania played a key role in the region after the Kosovo conflict and that Bucharest is the leader of the process of democratization of the area. The British journalist also said that Romania had the advantage that it can export very rapidly to all areas around the Black Sea and in this sense it can be very attractive to British investors.

[02] Open letter of Prime Minister Isarescu to teachers of Romania

Wednesday evening the Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, addressed an open letter to all teachers of Romania who are now on strike telling them that he could not see the sense of the extension of the strike which, quote LEADS NOWHERE unquote. THE TRADE UNIONS AND THE TEACHERS HAVE CREATED A BLOCK OF PRESSURE DEMANDING ALLOCATION OF FOUR PER CENT OF THE GROSS INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT TO EDUCATION. IT IS A NEW REALITY NOW WHICH HOWEVER MAKES VERY DIFFICULT THE OBSERVANCE OF THIS LEGAL PROVISION - estimates the Prime Minister. In this sense he recalls the adoption in the last ten years of numerous laws and bills which have provided allocations and budget facilities to numerous social categories which now makes this measure very hard to pass and which, as a matter of fact, have led to sums of money which are twice as big as the present budget. The Prime Minister considers that there could be a solution for the increase of the salaries of the teachers and namely the drastic cut of the number of clerks. The average salary of teachers and the very small difference between the salary of the youngest teacher and that of the senior university professor are two problems which must speedily be solved said the Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu. He invites teachers to reflect and ponder on the aspects which he presented in his letter, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

[03] Session of the National Leadership Bureau of PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party

In his turn first vice - president of the Party, Ioan Muresan, said the PNTCD Cabinet ministers will meet on Saturday in order to finalize a joint point of view to be discussed and supported during the meeting on Sunday of the coalition leaders.
