  • [01] The Government hopes to be able to control inflation

Prime-Minister Radu Vasile said that the Government hoped to be able to hold the inflation at the level they estimated - 25%. Mr. Vasile said that keeping the inflation rate under control depended very much on keeping the wages at the state owned public utilities at most 4 times greater than those in the last quarter of 1998. This and maintaining the budget deficit will allow keeping the inflation rate at the estimated level. "There are no problems from this point of view at the negotiations with the IMF. The Fund is anyhow accepting a variation of plus or minus 5%. Of course a minus would be execellent but also a plus would be good as a more realistic rate" - the Prime-Minister said. RADOR, March 1

[02] Works of the DUHR Representatives' Council

The Representatives' Council within the Democratic Union of Hungarians ended its works in the city of Targu Mures on Sunday. They prepared the 6th congress of the DUHR and they established that this congress would be attended by 519 delegates, almost 100 more than last year. The works of the congress are due to take place in Miercurea Ciuc on May 15 and 16. At the end of the Council's works they adopted a declaration in which they show discontent over how Romanian authorities fulfil their duties in cases involving ethnic Hungarian citizens. The Council also protested over the recent decision by the National Audio-Visual Council over the duty to translate in Romanian all texts in other languages. They said this decision was unconstitutional. The participants also adopted a declaration stating that the leadership of the Party is empowered to make all approaches with the authorities to lift ban on lawyer Eva Maria Barki coming to Romania.
