  • [01] Four new presidential advisers

    President Emil Constantinescu is to designate four new presidential advisers. The new officials include Petru Paun Jula, who is to be the head of the Department for social and health affairs, Emil Moroianu, the future head of the Legal Department, and Claudiu Doltu, the new head of the Department for economic strategy and reform. Floricel Marinescu is to act as chancellor and presidential adviser of the recent Orders Office. RADOR

    [02] Senate proceedings

    At its meeting on Tuesday, the Romanian Senate has continued the debates about the draft law on preventing and sanctioning corruption. The senators have adopted 26 of the 38 articles in the law, and decided to send the article 27 back to the Legal Commission for review as, in their opinion, the provisions in article 27 might lead to human rights abuses. The initial version allows the prosecutor or the court to decide a 30-day period of bank account monitoring, listening in to phone calls and access to information systems in order to provide evidence or detect criminals. If the court believes it is necessary, the 30-day period may be extended. RADOR

    [03] House of Deputies proceedings

    At their meeting on Tuesday, the Romanian deputies have adopted the Law on legal executors and the Law on pensions for the disabled, orphans and war widows. The law on pensions stipulates fixed pension quantums according to invalidity degrees as follows: 1-st degree - 1 million lei; 2-nd degree - 800,000 lei; 3-rd degree - 600,000 lei. The war widows are expected to get 500,000 lei. Further debates are expected about the public system of pensions and other rights of social insurance. RADOR

    [04] The deputy prime minister and foreign minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is visiting Romania

    The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Jacques Poos, has arrived in Bucharest on Tuesday for a three- day visit. At the talks with Romanian officials in Bucharest, Mr Poos is expected to tackle issues concerning the bilateral relations of economic and cultural interest. Other topics of major interest on the agenda of the talks include Romania's integration into the European structures, the European security, the regional and subregional co-operation and the country's relations with its neighbours.     [05] Romania's Joint Chief of Staff on a visit to Washington

    Romanian Joint Chief of Staff, General Constantin Degeratu, is on a visit to the US following an invitation by General Hugh Shelton, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. In an interview with the American media, Mr Degeratu said the visit was taking place "in a crucial moment for the developing military co-operation between Romania and the US and Romanian- American relations in general". Mr Degeratu hold working talks with the vicepresident of the Joint Chiefs of Staff International Committee aimed at establishing the Romanian-American joint schedule of the new stage in reforming the Romanian Army. The Romanian Joint Chief of Staff had a series of meetings with other similar counterparts in the US Army. RADOR

    [06] FPS delegation on a visit to Portugal

    A delegation of Romania's State Ownership Found (FPS), led by FPS chief Radu Sarbu, is in Portugal to attend the opening ceremony of the FPS Business Centre in Lisbon. At a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Radu Sarbu has presented Romania's privatisation opportunities in 1999. While meeting Portuguese Economy Minister Pino Moura, the FPS chief has presented his government's objectives in accelerating the economic reform. RADOR

    [07] Roma European Conference against racism

    The Roma European Conference against racism is taking place in the Transylvanian city of Sibiu. Participants include delegates of more than 40 Roma organisations in Europe. The two-day conference is expected to focus on the human rights abuses the Roma people are facing in the countries they live. The Roma would like to set up dialogue groups which might achieve a partnership between Romania's government structures and Roma civic associations aimed at drawing up a coherent policy on Roma minority matters.
