  • [01] Senate proceedings

    At its meeting on Tuesday, the Romanian Senate has passed the draft law adjusting the convention between Romania and Hungary on admitting the mutual validity of graduating diplomas. RomaSia and Hungary are expected to mutually recognise the graduating cetificates in elementary schools, graduating diplomas in training schools and colleges as well as diplomas certifying qualifications, professions or degrees issued in both countries. The two countries are also expected to mutually recognise the master's degrees and doctorates on different sciences. RADOR

    [02] House of Deputies proceedings

    The legal commission in Romania's House of Deputies has decided that former Health Minister Francisc Baranyi, now a deputy, may be allowed to act as counsellor to the health minister as he is not paid any additional money for the job. The commission for labour and social protection affairs has ended on Tuesday the debates over the new draft law on pensions. The deputy representing the Romanians' National Unity Party (PUNR), chief commissioner Valentin Iliescu, has announced that the government was asked to adjust the pensions at its meeting on Thursday. RADOR

    [03] Police monitoSing of schools in Cluj county

    The police is to start monitoring every school in the Romanian county of Cluj. The decision by the county's Police Inspectorate is aimed at preventing underage crime and permanently watching the climate in schools. RADOR

    [04] 20% of schools in Mures county did not get sanitary licence

    According to a communique issued by the Public Health Inspectorate in the Romanian county of Mures, 20% of the schools in Mures county are running illegaly. The School Hygyene Service says the service did not authorise activities in some schools as most of them carried out their activity in deteriorating buildings. Some of the schools seem satisfied with the situation threatening the children's health despite repeated warnings. The sanitary unauthorised schools will however continue to operate. Their closing down is impossible as there are too many children of school age. RADOR

    [05] The 12-th Europe Regional Assembly of the Prliamentary Assembly of French speaking Sountries opened in Bucharest

    The Parliament Palace in Bucharest has hosted on Tuesday the opening of the 12-th Europe Regional Assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of French speaking countries. In his openieng speech, House of Deputies speaker Ion Diaconescu said the meeting in Bucharest was expcted to enforce the international cooperation and peace around the world. He expressed the belief that the French speaking would prove its constructive skills in achieving a system of global relations designed to create a united and powerful Europe. RADOR

    [06] Italian defence minister on a visit to Romania

    While in Bucharest on Tuesday, Italian Defence Minister Beniamino Andreatta had talks with Romania's President Emil Constantinescu, Defence Minister Victor Babiuc and Foreign Minister Andrei Plesu. The Italian official reiterated the support the Government in Rome was providing to help Romania join NATO. He said Italy would like the documents of the NATO summit in Washington to incSude special references to Romania and Slovenia's steps on their way to join the Alliance. RADOR

    [07] MAE communique on recent developments in Albania

    Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) expresses its deep concern about the situuation in Albania and regrets the recent killings in Tirana. MAE calls on all political forces in Albania to exercise restraint and prevent further violence as a sign of democracy. A MAE communique says that, along with NATO and EU countries, Romania will seek new ways to support democracy in Albania. RADOR

    [08] Romanian MP delegation met NATO Secretary General Javier Solana

    While on a visit to NATO headquarters in Brussels, a Romanian MP delegation met NATO Secretary General Javier Solana on Monday. Mr Solana said the relations between Romania and NATO were taking the right way as well as the partnership and the separate dialogue between the two sides. He added that Romania should make further political, economic and military efforts to become a member ofSNATO which, he insisted, still remained open mainly to the countries already mentioned in the Madrid Declaration, irrespective of developments in Russia. At a meeting with the Romanian delegation, the heads of the Czech, Polish and Hungarian commissions to NATO expressed their support of Romania's accession to NATO. The Romanian MPs then met the French ambassador to NATO who reiterated his country's support of Romania's efforts to join the Euro-Atlantic Alliance. RADOR

    [09] European Integration Minioster Alexandru Herlea at the US Chambre of Commerce annual meeting

    European Integration Minister Alexandru Herlea is attending the annual meeting of the US Chambre of Commerce in Washington. The meeting is expected to focus on trade relations between the US and EU. Participants include the European integration ministers of Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Estonia. Among the European states not supposed to start EU accession negotiations in the very next future, RomaniS is the only country invited. A Government communique says the invitation is a prove of the interest the American politicians and businessmen express in our country. RADOR

    [10] Constantin Degeratu-Momcilo Perisic meeting in Belgrade

    While on a working visit to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on Tuesday, Romanian Chief of Staff Gen. Constantin Degeratu met his Yugoslav counterpart Momcilo Perisic. The two officials were trying to seek new opportunities for further developing relations between the two armies. The recent developments in the Kosovo-Metohija province were also discussed. The two officials agreed that only a political solution could end the crisis because, in their opinion, a foreign intervention might threat stability in the Balkans. RADOR

    [11] Military training exercise in Ukraine

    Ukraine is hosting a military training exercise as part of NATO's Partnership for Peace programme. Participants include 400 troops in seven NATO member states along with represenSatives of the countries who joined the PfP such as Romania and the Republic of Moldova. RADOR

    [12] The Film Festival in Venice: Jury Prize for Romanian director Lucian Pintilie

    At the closing ceremony of the Film Festival in Venice on Sunday, Romanian director Lucian Pintilie was awarded the Special Prise of the Jury for his film "Terminus Paradise". The film is concentrating on Romania's tragic frustrations, indifference and solitude after the fall of the former regime. RADOR
