[01] PNTCD Summer School in Campulung Muscel
A dialogue has been taking place on Wednesday between academic Constantin
Balaceanu-Stolnici, PNTCD senator Matei Boila and student members of the
ruling Christian Democrat National Peasant Party (PNTCD). While attending
the seminars hosted by the PNTCD Summer School in Campulung Muscel, the two
guests have recalled the basic principles of the Christian Democracy: Jqual
rights for all, human solidarity, property and family rights. Explaining
the solidarity principle, Mr Balaceanu-Stolnici said he believed that a
Christian principle should be also applied to the foreign policy. He warned
that, unfortunately, the Romanians proved they were not tolerant. We should
promote understanding, human solidarity and eliminate religious conflicts,
Mr Balaceanu-Stolnici added. In his opinion, justice should be based on
Christian values as well, because the Christian morals were based on two
main elements: the legal system of punishment and the punishent according
to law. In this respect, senator Matei Boila said both the morals and
manners were not included in a party's political programme, but God could
judge the way each man obeyed them. RADOR
[02] PNL Central Permanent Bureau meeting
A meeting of the National Liberal Party's Central Permanent Bureau has been
taking place on Wednesday at the PNL headquarters in Bucharest. The PNL
Bureau does not suppJrt any initiative designed to raise taxes, the tax on
real estate included. PNL first vicepresident Valeriu Stoica, also
Romania's justice minister, said after the meeting that, according to the
PNL leadership, any kind of fiscal hardship this year was unjustified. On
the other hand, the PNL will ask the Finance Ministry to examine the
discriminating way the SMEs fiscal policy was applied as compared with the
big loss-making state-owned economic agents. Referring to the alleged
dismissal of Finance Minister Daniel Daianu, the PNL leader said his party
was not supposed to discuss simple statements. As far as the Bell
Helicopter affair was concerned, Mr Valeriu Stoica announced that the issue
would be subject to debates during the next session of the Permanent Bureau,
only after the Finance and the National Defence Ministries (MApN) would
provide every information available. RADOR
[03] An appeal by Transport Minister Traian Basescu
Romanian Transport Minister Traian Basescu has askJd the SNCFR railway
workers to renounce any illegal strike actions making their company's
situation even more difficult. He announced that the Romanian Railways'
(SNCFR) financial situation did not allow any additional raise in the wages
as only 80% of the company's spendings were covered this year. The SNCFR
trade unions have announced a warning strike on July 23 followed by a
general strike on July 27 to support their demands. RADOR
[04] Warning strike at SC Energia in Constantza
A two-hour warning strike was organised by the "Solidaritatea" independent
trade union at SC Energia in Constantza on Wednesday morning. Tensions have
emerged on May 20, when director general Gheorghe Balos has failed to
negociate a labour contract favouring the trade unionists. The opening of
the labour conflict was announced at the Labour and Social Protection
Directorate of the county of Constantza. RADOR
[05] Financial aid for families affected by floods
Following an initiative by the RRA, the "Jogether for Good and for Worse"
humanitarian operation was organised to help the people affected by recent
floods. Delegates representing the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation (SRR)
have gone to the Transylvanian city of Sighisoara on Wednesday. They
offered 40 million lei to each of the three families who lost their homes
following the land slides this month. On Tuesday, another financial aid was
provided to seven families in Tarnaveni as their homes were partially
destroyed. RADOR
[06] President Emil Constantinescu is back from the US
Romanian President Emil Constantinescu has arrived in Bucharest on
Wednesday afternoon at the end of his official visit to the US. In a
statement at the Otopeni International Airport, the president said the
results of the visit were to be seen in the months and the years to come.
According to the president, the visit covered all the demands and the big
challenges the Romanian society was expected to meet on the verge of the
third millenium. "EssJntial topics concerning the development of the
infrastructure, the HT and IT and a competitive agriculture were subject to
debates during the visit", the president said. "A security system, a
regional, European and Euro-Atlantic security architecture were established
to ensure the peace and the guarantee allowing the Romanians to build the
society of tomorrow through their own efforts. Now, we can say that the US
have a clear image of Romania, of what we are and of what we can achieve",
the president concluded. RADOR
[07] Romania is ready to participate in the FYROM peace-keeping force
According to the statement made on Wednesday by National Defence Minister
Victor Babiuc, Romania has submitted to the UN Security Council its offer
of a 300 troop participation in the FYROM peace-keeping force and was now
waiting for an invitation. Mr Babiuc said that, if necessary, the president
was persuaded to ask the Parliament to approve the Romanian participation
in the FYROM mission. The minJster said he was also preparing a government
order to provide the estimated 60 billion lei for the Romanian unit
participation in the UN mission. RADOR
[08] Preparations before the meeting of the Romanian-Moldovan
interministerial committee
While in the Moldovan capital of Kishinev on Wednesday, MAE State Secretary
Mihai Razvan Ungureanu met Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Ion Sturza, also
Moldova's minister of economy and reform and president of the Moldovan
interministerial committee for Romanian affairs. The talks focused on
concrete projects of economic cooperation between the two countries and
preparations for the next meeting of the Romanian-Moldovan interministerial
committee planned in October this year. In another development, the
Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) diplomat met Moldovan Foreign Minister
Nicolae Tabacaru. The talks focused on specific issues concerning the
political cooperation between the two ministries as both sides expressed
the hope that the existing excJllent relations might play a major role in
promoting closer relations between the two countries. RADOR
[09] Bruckenthal Museum to get back its stolen paintings
Four paintings stolen from the Bruckenthal Museum 30 years ago are expected
to return to their legitimate owner on Wednesday when Romania's president
Emil Constantinescu will come back from his US official tour. A communique
issued by the Romanian Ministry of Culture says the director of the
Bruckenthal Museum in Sibiu is expected to receive the four paintings which
are to be exhibited for two weeks in Romania's National Museum of Art in
Bucharest and then return to the Bruckenthal Museum in Sibiu. RADOR
[10] Tusnad's Summer University 9-th edition
"Multicultural and National Particularities in Education. The Future of
Bolyai University" was the subject of the debates on Wednesday at the 9-th
edition of the Summer University organised in the resort of Tusnad. The
guests included Koto Jozsef, state secretary with Romania'J National
Education Ministry (MEN) is Hungarian counterpart Palinkas Jozsef. Speaking
"on the behalf of the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania
(UDMR), Mr Koto said that the Hungarian minority in Romania did not
exgerate when its claimed to preserve its national identity by drawing up
an autonomous educational system. "When 10% of its population are
represented by minorities, a country cannot promote the idea of a single
culture and a single nation", he said. The Hungarian state secretary
expressed his support for a "vertical" Hungarian language teaching
educational system - from kidergarten to university. "The Bolyai University
in Cluj is both Romania's and Hungary's problem, but the details of the
project should be drawn up by representatives of the Hungarian minority in
Romania. The Hungarian Government will make every effort in supporting the
setting up of a Hungarian language teaching university in Romania", Mr
Palinkas concluded. Romanian National Education MiniJter Andrei Marga did
not attend the meeting nor did he appointed a minister to represent him at
the Summer University in Tusnad. Despite being a MEN state secretary, Mr
Koto has addressed the audience as a UDMR representative. RADOR
