[01] President Emil Constantinescu Supports the Ministry of the Interior
Romanian President Emil Constantinescu said he would support the Ministry
of the Interior to stop the interference of politics into police activity.
Attending the official presentation of the Romanian police report on their
activity, during last year, the Romanian President announced he would
support, in his address to Parliament, the completion of the legislative
framework needed for an efficient police activity. No one, irrespective of
his or her position, political affiliation or relations, will ever get away
with crime again, the Romanian President also declared. RADOR
[02] Romanian-Syrian Joint Governmental Commission
The Romanian government is interested in developing its relations with
Syria, Romanian Prime-Minister Victor Ciorbea said on Tuesday, during his
meeting with the Syrian Deputy Prime Minister, Salim Yassim. Also on
Tuesday, Romania and Syria signed several co-operation accords in the
fields of tourism, health, culture and air transports, as well as an accord
between Youth and Sports Ministries from both countries, a cultural co-
operation programme between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs for two
years: 1998 - 2000, and, at last, a co-operation accord between the Trade
Chambers from Alep and Prahova. The Syrian guest, who participated at the
session of the Romanian-Syrian joint governmental commission, said that
this commission should have regular meetings, so that the bilateral
relations can further develop. In his turn, the Trade and Industry Minister,
Mircea Ciumara, appreciated that the number of signed documents is an
evidence of the great Romanian interest for Syria. RADOR
[03] Bulgarian Defense Minister Gheorghi Ananiev in Bucharest
The development of bilateral and regional military co-operation was high on
the agenda of the meeting in Bucharest between Bulgarian Defense Minister,
Gheorghi Ananiev and his Romanian counterpart, Victor Babiuc. The two
officials agreed on the need to create a Romanian-Bulgarian joint military
force, which could become a multinational one, if the ministers of defense
of the neighbouring countries agreed to participate in this project. The
two defense ministers also pointed out that all their joint projects were
significant steps towards NATO integration, an important objective for both
countries. During the meeting between Romanian Prime Minister Victor
Ciorbea and the Bulgarian Defense Minister, both high officials mentioned
Romania's and Bulgaria's interests of promoting their common objectives of
joining the European and Euro-Atlantic structures. The Bulgarian minister
said that the two countries should support each Sther in reaching these

[04] Romanian Military Delegation Visiting Great Britain
A Romanian military delegation, headed by general Gheorghe Bucsa, is paying
an official visit to Great Britain. Our correspondent in London reports the
aim of the visit is to develop the relations between the two armies as well
the exchanges meant to train airforce and airdefense officers. The Romanian
delegation is also to meet the British Defense and Foreign secretaries, the
representatives of the defense industry and will visit British military
bases. Romanian officials say the relationship between the two armies is
excellent. The investment Britain will make in the Romanian defense
industry in 1998 is much higher than in any of the three countries
nominated to get NATO membership. RADOR
[05] News from the Republic of Moldova
The main goals of the diplomacy of the Republic of Moldova are the
accession to the European Union, as an associate-member, as well as the
conclusion of the accordS with Azerbaidjan and Georgia, on the route of the
natural gas pipe linking the Caspian Sea with Europe, via the Republic of
Moldova. This statement was done in Chisinau, on Tuesday, by the President
of the Republic of Moldova, Petru Lucinski. Concerning the ties with
Romania and Russia, Petru Lucinski pointed out that the relations with
Romania strengthened in 1997. Petru Lucinski further said that, as far as
Russia was concerned, it actively participated in the settling of the
Transnistrian conflict (Transnistria being a region of Moldova, where a
Russian speaking separatist minority wishes to found a communist republic).
The President of Moldova added that Moscow had agreed on withdrawing its
military arsenal from that region. RADOR

In the first tour of the Australian International Tennis Tournament, held
in Melbourne, Romanian Dinu Pescariu lost 2-6, 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 to Italian
Andreea Gaudenzi. In the women's competition, Romanian Irina Spirlea -
number six seed - was fought out of the competition. Subsequently, the
favourites encountered no difficulty in their next games. Swiss Martina
Hingis - number one seed - won 6-1, 6-2 over German Wiltrud Probst, and
French Sandrine Testud - number nine seed - won 6-3, 6-2 over Spaniard Gala
