  • [01] A Reaction to President Emil Constantinescu's Televised Address

    Giving a new impetus to the reform and regaining the confidence of the population and of foreign countries, are the top priorities of 1998 - reads a communique published by the Democratic Party in Romania, on Sunday. The document is a reaction to the televised address made by President Emil Constantinescu concerning the political dispute between the Democratic Party and the Christian Democratic National Peasant Party, both members of the Government coalition. The Democratic Party's communique says that the President has transferred the political debate on the reform to Parliament, without justified reasons. After two weeks of statements by the two parties, the Romanian President delivered a televised address on Saturday evening, in which he summoned Romania's Parliament in an extraordinary session for Wednesday, January 21st. He said that the dispute within the government coalition was affecting the progress of the reform and had a negative impact on the economy. The President of Romania asked the leaders of the political parties to put an end to the conflict and to place the national interest above anything else. President Constantinescu also asked Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea to commit the Government's responsability in Parliament with regard to the major draft laws of the reform.

    [02] Executory Working Meeting

    Executory modified and completed the work study standards concerning the granting of the help for thermic energy suplimentary expenses to some special categories of the population, as says ROMANIA RADIO NEWS. On Saturday, the Executory decided: the share for the owed delay increases, for paying not in time of the budgetary bonds, such as taxes, duties, contributions and other budgetary incomes was settled to 0.25% for each day of delay. The Executory also approved three decisions concerning the industrial sector. At a press conference in Victoria Palace, the Trade and Industry Minister, Mircea Ciumara, detailed these decisions: "The first decision is referring to the coal price. It cannot be free because in the domain of mining a restructuring was not done, so that a competition is out of the question. The same situation concerns fuels. We were also extended the period for mentaining under control the coal price and I hope that the restructuring in the domain is to be finished in a half of the year". According to the Industry Minister, the second governmental decision is referring to the setting up of the National Agency for Development and Implementation of Restructuring Programmes in Mining Zones. The third decision settles the regulation for compensation of unrepaid debts to the industry settling day. RADOR

    [03] The Approval of the Governmental Resolution Concerning the Functioning of the Privatizing Ministry

    Today, the governmental resolution concerning the functioning of the Privatizing Ministry has been approved. This Ministry head office will be in the former building belonging to the Privatizing National Agency. The mentioned agency will also offer the emplyees for the new ministry, but only after an examination. PRO TV quotes the Privatizing Minister, Valentin Ionescu, who has done some specifications concerning the structure of this ministry: "This is not a beaurocratic ministry, there are only two departments with four general managements". The Minister Valentin Ionescu has also detailed the privatizing standards for commercial societies: "...the standards are referring to the sale procedures of those shares issued by the commercial societies where the state is one of the shareholders or one of the partners as well to the sale procedures held by those commercial societies controlled by state". The privatizing will be possible to be done by public offer for sale on capital market, by direct negotiation, auction and by deposit certificate. RADOR

    [04] VAT Is to Be not Modified

    VAT modification was postponed in the government meeting on Saturday. The implications of this postponing were analysed by Finance Secretary of State, Dan Radu Rusanu, for PRO TV. This postponing was also correlated to another government demand: the project for diminishing the wage tax. Speaking about the subject, Dan Radu Rosianu said: "...not even now, after so long period, it is not understandable that inside a budget the income and expenditure balance is absolutely necessarily".     [05] An Important Syrian Businessmen Delegation Pay a Visit to Romania

    An important Syrian businessmen delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister centred on economical problems, Salim Yassim, together with other four ministers, has arrived in Bucharest, on Sunday. They have come for participating at the Joint Governmental Commission, Romania-Syria, works since Monday. According to ROMANIA RADIO NEWS, the Trade and Industry Minister, Mircea Ciumara, declared, on the occasion, that a reciprocal warming of our relationship is to be done, as well signing of some agreements concerning commerce, transport, youth and sport domains. "We have also to find a solution according to which Syria to be able to become a gate towards Arabian world, for Romania", also said Mircea Ciumara. The leader of Syrian delegation, Deputy Prime Minister Salim Yassim has mentioned a multitude of problems from his agenda referring to economic co- operation, commercial, scientific and other domains relations, such as health and education.     [06] Trade and Economic Co-operation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova

    A group of Romanian experts are now in Chisinau to assess the state of trade and economic co-operation between Romania and the Republic of Moldova. This analysis is made on the basis of the agreement signed in March 1997, at the end of the session of the Interministerial Commettee for bilateral ties.

    [07] Romania - Series Leader in the 7th Group of the European Football Championship

    Romania is series leader in the 7th group of the European Football Championship, the final tournament of which will be held in the year 2000 and will be organized for the first time by two countries: Belgium and the Netherlands. After lots drawing on Sunday at Gand, Belgium, Romania's group also includes Portugal, Slovakia, Hungary, Liechtenstein and Azerbaidjan. The matches of the nine preliminary groups of the European Football Championship will be played between September 1998 and October 1999 and the final tournament, hosted by four Dutch towns and four Belgian towns will take place between June 10th and July 2nd, 2000.
